B7 RS4 Clutch Problem?

Post by Undy » Tue Jan 31, 2023 2:03 am

Hi all,

I'm looking for some insight and advice as my 2007 RS4 B7 is very hard to get into R, 1, & 2, and often grinds slightly changing into higher gears. This is an intermittent problem becoming more frequent over time, but when it works it's perfect. It will also move forward in 1st with my foot on the clutch and off the brake (like an auto does in D with your foot off the brake), making me think that the clutch isn't properly disengaging, which might also explain why its difficult to get into and change gear? I cannot make the clutch slip at all no matter how much I ride it.

I have been told by an Audi mechanic that the clutch is completely screwed and needs replacing (yet I can drive it normally, mostly), but a clutch specialist said its engaging and disengaging fine, so he didn't think the clutch is the problem.

I have no issue replacing the clutch if it is the issue, but I don't want to spend AU$7,000 on it just to find it is something else. The symptoms read like they are similar to a failing slave or even master cylinder, I just don't know how to tell, is it worth replacing these to see if it fixes the problem? I also understand that with the self-adjusting clutch, there is no way to manually adjust its engagement, does this mean it is just worn out and therefore can't self-adjust enough to disengage properly?

Any help is much appreciated.

Andy
