Brake failure during MOT

Post by Burty » Fri Jan 20, 2023 5:27 pm

While it was being MOT'd my beloved RS decided to split a brake pipe while on its road test having passed the static test. The small loop-shaped connecting pipe between caliper and chassis on the driver-side front has split. Nine years ago I had the same issue on the near-side front and as before a new piece of pipe will need to be made up to replace it.

At least it happened close to home !

Sounds lucky to me! Did you replace both sides 9 years ago? Good time for flexi-braided stainless.

Sorry, I didn't explain the problem accurately - the pipe that split is the looped metal one that links one part of the caliper to the other.

On speaking to Martin at Unit20, he told me the caliper connecting pipe was available from Ebay - ordered it yesterday and it arrived today for £25.00 - getting it fitted on Monday so MOT will be sorted.

Any chance posting a link to that balance pipe Burty..

Iwas looking at them too but they were 50 quid, never seen any at 25 so that's a great deal

No, bother, cheers for that Burty... I was going to buy a flaring tool, piping and ends.

I've made up stacks of brake pipes in the past, there's nothing to it with the right tools.

We had the sykes pickavant turret tool, been looking at this one.

It's similar to the SP one, but it's not 300 quid.

We need the DIN 4.75 dies which are included in this one.

This the one we had when I was on the tools, I'm watching this, it's just been listed and now at 88 quid, it'll probably hit 170/180 when it ends .

Dunno if I want to spend on a flaring tool if I'm not going to use it much, could quite happily do so tho if peeps off the forum were to buy from me, could probably do similar for £10-15 per made up pipework for that size.

The ones I saw were 50 quid each which started this whole thing off..
