B7 engine - what are these bits circled?

Post by chive90 » Tue Jan 17, 2023 12:00 am

This isn't my engine (thankfully with the awfully corroded carbon) but what are the small bits of metal that are a copper sort of colour by the bolts that I have circled?

Image

The reason I'm asking is I've noticed on various pictures of B7 engines these can either be a silver 'metal' type colour or they can be like a copper/oil type colour as they are in this picture.

On my engine they are also a bronze/copper colour and I was wondering if this indicates an issue or is any cause for concern? I don't however know what they are so hoping someone here does!

Thanks

They are just the bolts that hood the intake manifold on.

Maybe due to age they get discoloured or dirty.

I mean the small metal pieces at the bottom of the bolts though.
Towards the bottom of the green circle I've put on the pic - I know the pic isn't the best.

Maybe the same answer applies, just discoloured over time but I wondered what the pieces of metal are/do?

Look like washers to me? Sometimes stainless, sometimes copper which might explain the difference in colour. I think they are there to stop the bolts marking the inlet manifold.

Oh I see. If it's just under the bolt head it is a washer.

I maybe wrong here , but is that not part of the gasket?

Yeah I think you're right. I managed to get a better pic - you can see that they are a copper sort of colour - does this indicate an issue at all?

Ah I see. yes they are the inlet manifold gaskets. The OEM ones are a goldish copper colour. Some aftermarket ones are a plain steel type of colour.
