Strange Noise from Front when front shocks compress
Strange Noise from Front when front shocks compress
Hi all,
Long time.
My B7 RS4 Avant with aftermarket Konis and Meyle HD control arms has started to make an odd noise. It's a 2007 with just over 60k miles.
My trusted garage has advised me that it is nothing worry out, everything looks and feels as it should, and that it is most probably the undertrays catching on the ground.
The noise (from NearSideFront only) only really happens when the car goes into and out of a dip in the road, and car pitches downwards aggressively. No other time. It's worse when going at pace.
The sound is best described as a grounding out and plastic on tarmac, but I really cannot see what is fouling.
My next job is to put white paint on all the undertrays bits which may be catching, go for a drive and see what's left ... But I fear the problem may be suspension related.
Has anyone experienced a similar thing? It's driving me mad as the car is absolutely mint otherwise.
Can worn shocks do this sort of intermittent thing, can bushes squeak, creak or grind under certain conditions?
Would really appreciate some guidance.
Thank you

car pitches downwards aggressively.
This sounds completely wrong - something is up, I would suggest. Can't help with what it might be, though. Have you taken the mechanic out so that he/she can experience the problem, or just described it to them?

Re: Strange Noise from Front when front shocks compress
I think that may just be my explanation of WHEN it happens.
The movement of car seems totally normal, imagine driving over a dip in the road, and the car is pushed down to the road, that's when the noise occurs.

OK. I'd still suggest taking the mechanic out if possible/you haven't done that yet.

Re: Strange Noise from Front when front shocks compress
Sound like the tyre is fouling the arch liner due to lowering?. Have you removed the screw and tab at the top of the arch? If you lower it needs removing.
If it's not the arch liner\tab there isn't much to foul on compression, unless you tracking is so far out its rubbing something, but then you'd know it.
Or the shocker is not damping and thus dipping so low on that side it fouling?

Re: Strange Noise from Front when front shocks compress
Screw and tab sounds like a likely culprit. Can I just whip this out without any I'll effects. It must do something?? I may paint this first and see if the paint comes off... Just before I start removing screws!
The noise sounds a lot like tyre on liner now you mention it.
I have had all the suspension checked over and I'm fairly certain that they are working as they should.
Thank you for your response.

Re: Strange Noise from Front when front shocks compress
You can sometimes see on the screw itself that it has been rubbed. Might not need paint.
Yes it can be removed. Unscrew and wiggle\snap the tab off. Check liner for rub marks in case it is missing clips and hanging too low.
