Gearbox notchy?

Post by otb123 » Wed Jan 26, 2022 10:42 pm

Always noticed my gearbox was silky smooth, and the past few days have noticed a slight notch when shitfing gears now. Or maybe I’m overthinking it too much!

What could this be, linkages or old gearbox oil the culprit?

No idea but in case this is any use to anyone I've had trouble getting into first gear. No other symptoms. Apparently the clutch is not worn (still original 70k) but not completely disengaging. therefore when trying to go into first gear, the gearbox is still moving and needs to stop fully before engaging first, hence the slight difficulty going into first. I'm told it wont wear anything else out.
The shifts on mine arent silky smooth but would't say notchy. Would be interesting to compare back to back as i've only ever driven this one.
Going to wait and see if it gets any worse of bothers me too much. Also have clunk in the steering rack but i'm also told it doesnt appear to be much of an issue at the moment.
Wonder how much. steering rack replacement would be? Sounds expensive

Maybe worth changing the gearbox oil?

Mine is much the same into 1st gear especially from very cold. I sometimes go into 2nd then 1st which can seem a bit smoother but maybe it's in my head.

I'm the exact same. From first start it can be a bit tough to get into first so I row from 3rd to 2nd and then into first. Once its in any way warm its all ok though. Gearbox oil done not too long ago.

My one is on 178,000 miles and only recently has it been reluctant to shift from 1st to 2nd but only when cold. Once up to temperature its smooth as silk.

The car on the 2nd clutch original gearbox and I change the gearbox oil every 4 years or so. I am hoping an oil change will fix it but double de-clutching works for now on cold days.

I am the 3rd owner and have had the car for 11 years and 85,000 miles. I heel-toe constantly which might explain why my synchro's have lasted so long or I might just be lucky.

It's a common issue with these cars to develop worn syncromechs though, JHM do an upgrade kit in the States.

If I remember rightly, there is a sleeve on the clutch which gets a bit sticky with age and wear, this can cause the clutch to not fully release. It can also cause the dreaded sticky clutch pedal as well!

Come to think of it, my pedal is starting to stick again once you use the high part of the rev range so a new clutch is likely due soon.

The B5 and the B7 both had a notchy first gears
A trate of the gear box nothing to get too worried about but a gear box service will reduce this
As fo the peddle it can be a sticky cable rather that the clutch
