Oil cooler - ticking time bomb?

Post by otb123 » Tue Sep 14, 2021 11:31 pm

Just bought a lovely example of a B7. Whilst it’s had the suspension, deflap and decoke done the oil cooler and pipes have yet to be touched.

Is it the case of they all go bad eventually and leak or do some last depending on how/where the cars are used?

Cheers.

Hi,

Likely it will fail sooner or later, issue is due to bi-metallic corrosion between the hose line couplings and the oil cooler, my B7 only done 38k miles and just replaced cooler with the excellent Forge product.

If you change the pipes before they fully corrode and fail you can save and reuse the oil cooler, providing there are no leaks to it.

Pipes are the expensive part :) , the cooler can be got quite cheaply (for RS4 parts) on the aftermarket!

Just for info.
When you change pipes. Deburr the sharp edge on block. It cuts the oring on install.

Recently installed new OEM hoses and a Radtec cooler. Greased the o-rings and they slide into the oil ports quite easily, impressed with the Radtec cooler which is good quality and a fraction of the OEM cooler cost.

Yes definately do this upgrade as soon as you possibly can.. I didnt  Better to be proactive - the OEM ones do not really last unfortunately - Changed myself and as mentioned above good call with the Radtec radiator too  Quality piece of kit
