B7 RS4 slipping out of 2nd on overrun

Post by willcoles » Wed Nov 11, 2020 11:02 am

A B7 RS4 that I'm considering buying slipped/popped out of 2nd gear on overrun on the test drive. I worked the gearbox and managed to get it to do it again but I wouldn't say it happens all of the time.

Is this a common fault? What is likely to need replacing? Is the repair something that should be done asap or could it wait till spring?

Thanks in advance.

if its only on the overrun you can work around it till it needs a clutch and do it then,if it popped out under load it would be more of a worry

my particular style of driving would probably never uncover / encounter that issue as for the most part i just go up and down the gears,i dont trickle through traffic much-which is where i can imagine that fault would manifest itself as a bit of a pita

it wont do any harm driving it like that providing gearbox fluid is clean

That doesn't sound like a clutch related problem but a synchro one to me. I'd speak with a gearbox specialist, they'll tell you straight away or speak with MRC.
