Engine start

Post by Adymars » Sun Feb 02, 2020 12:50 pm

I need some help and advice ! My car wouldn't start today 😭. It made all the right noises but just wouldnt fire up. It has happened once before but i tried a few times and it did eventually start. Any ideas would be gratefully received 🙏

First thing to do is get is scanned with VCDS.
Was the engine warm when you tried to start it or first start of the day?
Did it turn over or just click when you pressed the start button?

Could be a relay on the way out.
Try to get a scan done and see what codes come back.

When the battery died on my wife's A3, all that would happen at start-up was a repeated 'click click click. whilst the key was turned' Don't rule that out.

Someone else suggested a relay. Its definitely not the battery.

I rang the rac to get it recovered and the guy o the phone said the start button can sometimes lose connection between it & the fob if the battery in the fob is low???? Does this seem likely on a 13 yr old car. We shall see 🤷‍♂️

Ok so update on this problem. Slightly embarrassing for me but the RAC guy cam around and was a complete petrol head. Checked the battery health and got in and it started straight away ???? I said "wtf have you done" he said "the floor mat hsd slipped under the clutch pedal and unless its fully engaged it wont start". We both had a good laugh and he continued on to tell me that my battery was a cheap one and only had 60% health and if i leave it sitting for a week or 2 in the cold weather it wont be good enough to fire the beast up. Anyway lessons learnt and it cost me nothing. Big shout out to Matt from the RAC for helping out so quickly, very knowledgeable guy.
