Hi.
How many of you have had this item replaced? I’ve read that the plastic tensioner wears causing the chain to go slack.
I’m aware it’s an expensive job and engine out.
What I can’t seem to find out is typically what sort of mileage is this replaced at?
There are a number of rs4 cars advertised online with reportedly fsh that have done well over 100k miles and yet no mention of a timing chain replacement.
I guess I’m trying to identify the “ big” bills, I know of the DRC, oil cooler issues, disc/pads etc
Thanks
Sean
Engine timing chain
Re: Engine timing chain
The S4 had plastic tensioners, the RS4 uses metal ones which are longer lasting.
My car is on 165k and the chains have not been done. Will do them once they become noisy or go out of limits.
Clutch/flywheel, DRC, oil cooler, aux radiators are the main issues but things like subframe bushes and suspension arms need to be checked given the age of these cars now.
Also look out for wheel arch paint bubbling.

Re: Engine timing chain
Thanks for that, I was quite concerned re the rs4 chain.
If I manage to get one, it’s only going to be used at weekends and the occasional day in the week as I get picked up/ dropped off re work

Re: Engine timing chain
The RS4 has upgraded followers compared to the S4. I've never heard of a B7 RS4 with chain guide issues. I wouldn't worry about it.
