P0141 error, new O2 sensor, CEL still on

Post by oxblood8 » Sun Dec 22, 2019 5:51 am

Hi All

Having an issue with my avant at the moment. CEL came on upon scanning threw up the P0141 error code (02 Sensor Heater Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 2). Took to my mechanic who replaced the O2 sensor with a new Bosch unit. 1 day later CEL on again.

Took it back and he is saying that the new O2 sensor is starting out with a positive voltage (I believe the others are all reading zero at startup). He is saying that the new one (and probably the old one) were not coming up to temperature quick enough, thats why it's throwing the code. Once it is up to temperature it is fine (he took it for a drive whilst hooked up to diagnostic).

Any ideas as to what it could be and how to remedy it?

FYI I had the cat on that side cleaned out about 2 years ago, he reckons that the cat is still fine.

I hope I have explained that ok, just passing on what he told me.

Check the heater ckt?
There is a heater in the sensor to heat it up faster during initial start up. Sounds like the wiring may be bad.

Hey

I used to have codes like this when i got my car and i was hesitant to change by myself so i took it to a Vag specialist who was working on audi. I did some VCDS scans before i took it to the Vag specialist and i used to get DTC for sensor heater.
After the VAG specialist replaced the 2 sensors.
After i took the car from the garage and took it back home everything was fine no Engine light.
The next day i took the car for the drive and after 15 kms MIL ON.
After that i took the car to a friends lift and do everything myself and checked voltage everything and it was the wrong lambda sensors .

Check your Lambda sensor part number mate because with Bosch sensors there are a lot of part numbers and mechanics get confused .

Do you get another DTC scans accept P0141 ?

Nah P0141 is the only code that I am getting at least with my scan tool which is just a cheap one.

I'll try and get the part number from my mechanic.

Just an update on this one. So my mechanic contacted the parts supplier and they mentioned that they had a few of these back and sounded a bit cagey. Anyway he got the new one, was in a different Bosch box and the the nose on it was different. Been in 2 days and so far so good.

Not sure who his supplier is but I believe he has used them a lot in the past. Maybe they got some knock offs which seem rife these days.

Glad your car is working properly!
It's hard to find a decent mechanic this days, they always looking for cheap alternatives at parts and they choose the wrong lambdas close to your lambda specs (pins , cable lenght) just for a few bucks more profit and they try to convice you that your car has other issues that cause this problems.

Yeah its been over a month now and the car is running awesome. Another issue I had prior to putting in the new O2 sensor was that if i hadnt driven the car in 2 days it would struggle to turn over when pressing the start button. That has completely gone away.

In terms of my mechanic, he's been a family friend for like 40 years and has major Euro experience. Think it was just his usual supplier not doing the right thing (may or may not have even been their fault).
