Glad that you both walked away from this and no one was hurt. If it is a written off. You could by it back and fix or break it.

Hi again

Cheers for the thoughts. Was told again today that it’ll def be written off unfort. Just trying to figure out was ‘cat’ it’ll be - structural / non etc.

I checked Autotrader for same yr/miles etc and ranging from £13500-17000 iirc. Let’s see what joke the insurance offer as ‘market value’ as apparently ‘’checking autotrader isn’t a good guide”!!!!! Who would have thought that checking the market to see how much they are being advertised for, is no guide for how much it’s actually worth!!! Poxy insurance companies.

this had me wondering...

If a car like this is smashed and repaired by the insurance company and ends up with a CAT rating... this clearly affects the resale value of the vehicle.

Do insurance companies here pay you for diminished value as well?
Why will it end up with a cat rating if it is repaired by the insurance company? The cat categories are for cars that are written off so won't be repaired by the insurance company.
Understood. Having never smashed a car this far I've not got massive experience of this (gladly). Ill rephrase - When a car is smashed and repaired doesn't it still get a flag on its record that reduces its value? Does the insurance company compensate for this?

Hope it all works out for you OP.

You heed to find evidence of cars actually selling at that price not what it is up for sale for. Been there and done that!

If it was me I would wait and see what the assessor says first and take it from there. Get a report of the damage from the insurance company and their assessment in costs. Had a similar situation with my sons car and we ended up keeping his car along with a cash settlement. We stripped the car to save on labour sourced the necessary panels and got a local body Shop to do the rest. He just loved his motor and couldn’t bear to part with it.

Best of luck whatever happens

If you are claiming against the other person's insurance, be careful. I know of two people who've had that part of the claim refused because having something similar (or faster still) is deemed excessive. You might end up footing the bill yourself...

It only gets recorded if the car is written off I believe. If it is not written off then the only way to check if it has been in an accident and repaired is to physically inspect it.

These cars even look good smashed up. I don't mean to be condescending but before it's inspected, wash and clean it, and take lots of photographs before during and after repair if you keep the car. Good luck man.
