It's the consumables that are mega expensive on an RS. People dont really look into then when buying, as well as £550/year road tax and 15mpg, they are expensive to run. Then you have the common issues like aux rad, oil cooler pipes. Then there are other other issues such as manifold issues, clutch/flywheel issues, secondary injection issues, list goes on. Then you will want to mod/tune again quite expensive. Great great cars, dont get me wrong, I've owned 3 different RS's.

Please go in with your eyes wide open.
You are absolutely spot-on. I had the dreaded valve stem problem so opted for a reconditioned engine. Through some bad luck (getting a recommendation off a friend of a mechanic mate of his who turned out not to be very good) and loads of issues caused by this "mechanic" I ended up spending around £12K on it. It's running absolutely amazing now but jeez these things burn money like crazy when anything goes wrong with them.

In the last 6 months mine has had a new clutch, flywheel, ECU, suspension, reconditioned engine, fuel injectors and countless smaller ancillary parts.

The valve stems wear down and oil starts leaking through. So every time you set off from the lights etc. you are blowing out tons of oil rich exhaust fumes.

It's quite common on high mileage cars mine had 152K on the clock.

Mine has done 128k miles and barely uses any oil - about 1 litre every 10k miles! Hadn't heard of this as a common issue ?

Hi buddy.

Maybe common was the wrong word to use but it does happen on high milage ones my stems were pretty bad!

I wouldn't overly worry about it buddy yours sounds fine but if you do start seeing oil in your exhaust fumes then this *could* be the reason.

I bourght one for less than £10000. It was the 3rd car that I saw. Was thousands cheaper than the others,I went to see.But the body work was mint compared with the other two.
The eml light was on, was no power to the boot lid, the steering was squeaky, the air conditioning doesn't work, and the m.o.t was about to run out.
The eml light, was due to a broken sensor connector ,£5 for a new one. Oiled the steering column bushes £0, The power to the boot lid was a broken earth wire, fixed myself £0,and passed the m.o.t. The air con. has a major leak somewhere, maybe that will cost a bit more money.
Done about 800 miles in the car,no more problems appeared ,love the car to bits !
So from my experience it is possible to get a cheap B7 RS4,that isn't to bad. Had set myself a target of £14500,so am very pleased, got myself what seems to be a decent car that am happy with, and still got a few grand in the bank.
