Modern Head Units - Kenwood, Pioneer, etc.

Post by monkeychap » Tue Apr 09, 2019 10:08 am

Hi,

How much functionality do you lose if you fit one of these in an RS7 ? I don't mind losing SATNAV and CD Changer, but it sounds like I'll lose the ECU connection for car settings etc ? Are any head units more integrated than others ?

What do you mean by car settings? I don't recall any car setting on my RNS-E on my RS4 Avant?

You lose the sat nav comms to the central display between the tacho and Speedo in every aftermarket unit that I'm aware of. Some units (Alpine) can retain the song / track info to this display, others you'll lose this too.

That's it I believe.

Yep, what Alex and James said. No car settings on the RNSE.

Thanks ! What do the "Car" and "Setup" buttons do then ? I must confess I couldn't see that they did anything useful, but just assumed they did !

So...I've spoken to a few car audio places (some of them *much* dodgier than expected) and it seems like quite an involved job to fit a new head unit with DAB and handsfree. My car already has the bluetooth handsfree though - is there a way to use the existing microphone or do they really have to fit a new one ?

It’s really not. The most tricky bit is wiring in a switched live as the OEM unit uses CANBUS to tell it to switch on or off. But anyone semi competent in wiring can do that. The rest is plug and play.

DAB involves a self adhesive aerial to the inside of the windscreen - I’ve done away with normal FM now as it’s so much better.

Hands free is simply putting a mic in the rooflining. It’s all just running wires behind trim.

Agreed. Not that hard, pretty basic. For me the big pain in the install was filtering noise from the speaker lines.

Thanks

Kenwood DMX7017DABS seems to be well respected, so I'll probably go with that unless there's a better recommendation ? I might even have a go at fitting it...what could possibly go wrong...

Is there a particular ISO adapter kit you used for the rns-e replacement ? There seem to be quite a few that fit the car.

Have a look through my build thread about fitting, should give you a bit of an idea. I’m still waiting for my ground control loop to arrive so I can fit that and a canbus interface to sort the illumination too.

Cheers

That’s the unit I have. It’s very good - does everything I need and is easy to navigate. I had some issues with ground feedback but they were mostly caused by an unamplified FM adaptor. Like I said, now I have DAB, I don’t use FM anyway so just disconnected it. Still get a tiny bit of noise but just haven’t got round to fitting ground loop isolators yet.

Background noise tend to come from the RCA outputs which you can buy suppressors that work online or buy a high and low adapter to run off the speaker leads to run RCA's

I run one of the new android units which I love.

Do you have a link to the isolators your talking about? I just bought a unit and will be fitting it once the facia plate arrives. Thanks John
