What engine oil..

Post by zacamor » Tue Mar 05, 2019 10:38 am

Hi guys, thought there might of been a sticky somewhere about what lubricants to use but cannot find any solid answers.

I have purchased Fuchs titan gt1 5w-40 synthetic.
Is this a good choice for the 4.2?

OEM: Castrol edge Titanium 5W-30 Long-Life (Fully Synthetic) or Castrol Edge Titanium 0W-30 (Fully Synthetic)
My choice would be the second of these for short distance travel, frequent starts & stops

So is the 5w-40 No good?
What vw spec should it meet as well?

I don't mind returning what I have if it's no good?

Ok, I haven't had it long so not really sure.
The oil I picked up is Fuchs titan gt1 5w-40 synthetic but I'm not sure if it has the right vw spec?

Is it fully synthetic? I was using that oil before but in 5w-30, moved to millers nano tech 5w-40 now

I use Fuchs Titan GT1 Pro c3 5w30. Think quite a few folk recommend this oil. Have only had to top up with 1l in 8k miles so doesn't seem to burn a lot.

I can't be sure what the spec is but you'll find it in the cars handbook, i think it's a choice between VW 505 00 & VW 507 00. One is long life and one is not in the Castrol range.
As long as the oil you use has any of these specs it should be good

This might help

Audi recommends 5W-40 oil in the US.
The oil must be VW 502 and API SL
Other viscosities allowed are 5W-30 or 0w-40.... and only if 5W -40 not available.
I year / 10000 miles fixed interval.
Castrol Syntec is used by Audi USA.

The oil used in RS4s outside the USA ( UK /Australia) is a vw 504 spec oil. This only comes in 5w-30 weight. Australia has fixed service intervals, UK variable.

The Castrol oil used by dealers in UK and Australia is VW Longlife III vw 504-507. ( Also known as SLX Powerflow Longlife III in Australia and Castrol Edge 5w-30 in the UK). No API rating given as these are Audi specific oils.
