Engine Undertray - again!

Post by delroyx » Mon Mar 04, 2019 6:32 pm

I have tried the search and can't find the specific answer to my query.

I need a new engine undertray - but local TPS say there are now near as dammit £400 (inc VAT). Even with some discount the best I could get it down to was still £300 odd. It was described as 'heavy duty' so I'm guessing it's been revised at some point - part number now 8E0863821AT which I guess supersedes the one I had which ended AP. (Funny how old threads suggest they were “only” £180 a few years ago!)

Anyway, I know many will say get one fabricated like Faisal but that is even bigger bucks.

I'm wondering will a standard A4/S4 one fit - now I understand they won't have the vents for brakes etc but I'm willing to cut some in if needed as I have the remains of my old one I can use to offer it up?

I just wondered if the dimensions are the same?? From the research I've done there is some suggestion the RS4's undertray is wider than a standard one.

If a standard one does fit, are they all the same – ie one from a petrol/diesel

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

found this from last year:

might be worthwhile dropping Tom at Crewe Audi a message to see what he can get hold of..

EDIT - yep, the 'T' version supersedes the 'S' version:

If you want one soon I wouldn’t bother. I’m still waiting for him to reply about buying adaptors for my windscreen washers that I have since bought from elsewhere and fitted.

Cheers

Tom @ Crewe Audi has replied

"RRP is £399.23 the best i can do is £360.00 postage £50.00"

Does anyone know if a standard A4/S4 one will fit?

They won’t and besides they won’t have the mounting points for the brake cooling ducts.

Are they different dimensions then?

I was thinking of some how cutting the old mounting points off the remains of my old one & somehow cutting/bonding them to a standard one.

Looks like I might just bite the bullet

I’m pretty sure they're not only different dimensions but the mounting points are all different. It’ll look like a dogs breakfast if you try to “adapt” a non-RS4 undertray to do the job. Not that you’d ever see it.

If it makes you feel any better, the updated part is still more expensive in the US, than it is the UK. :audibash:

You can still get the AS part but it’s noticeably thinner than the AT part, although it is far cheaper.

Or perhaps try some of the ones being broken on ebay if you're not happy with the price?

Quick update & a few things which may help others.

New undertray is finally on. Can't believe how much of the old one disappeared!

Anyway, had some 'fun' with the dzus(?) bolts. I had some cheap ones from ebay but they were rubbish. They are so soft and the ends got chewed by the clips so didn't hold.

The one on the left is OEM the right is ebay rubbish.

TPS charge RRP of nearly £4 each for these.

Also I found a flat head screwdriver didn't work so bought a tool specially for it - should make removing much easier.

Also found I needed a small bit of trim at the leading edge of the wheel arch which got a bit mangled when the tray came off. All ordered so 99% there with it.

Part numbers which may help others:

Undertray
8E0863821 AT

Air ducts for brakes - I managed to fix mine
8E0863149
8E0863150

Mud guard trim
8E0853887F

Bolts
8D0805121

Hope this helps someone
