Cataclean
Shown in this month's evo, and seemingly RAC-endorsed. Anyone tried? the idea of a quarterly additive to keep the engine de-coked seems appealing in comparison with having to travel, be off the road for a day or two, large one-off cost.
Thoughts?

Re: Cataclean
Could be wrong but from my understanding the fuel does not get injected over the back of the valves so any fuel additive will not help to keep the valves from carbon. There isn't any solution apart from using decent oil and making sure the engine gets a good 'drive' from time to time, short stop start journeys do not help carbon build up. This is why you need to manually remove the carbon. But i stand corrected.........
Re: Cataclean
I get the impression that using good fuel etc, making sure that the engine is thoroughly exercised (as soon as warmed, natch) are all helpful, but I've always done them and they don't prevent carbon build-up completely. I'm just wondering if this might help if used too.

Re: Cataclean
I don’t think it will as the engine does not inject fuel across the valves so any additive you add do not go via the effected area.

It won’t make the slightest difference.12th wrote:Shown in this month's evo, and seemingly RAC-endorsed. Anyone tried? the idea of a quarterly additive to keep the engine de-coked seems appealing in comparison with having to travel, be off the road for a day or two, large one-off cost.

The carbon buildup occurs in the inlet manifold. There is no fuel there.

Re: Cataclean
Hi All, sorry if this sounds a bit daft. If fuel is injected into the cylinder head & only air goes in through the inlet valves. How would there be a carbon deposit build up in the inlet manifold.I get it on the exhaust valves but on the inlet side?

Re: Cataclean
Oil from the PCV (crankcase ventilation) is oily mist that goes back into the intake to be burnt. Secondly, combustion strokes overlap. Thirdly exhaust gas recirculation also puts sooty crap into the intake to be burnt. When that mixes with the oily much of the PCV you end up with the crap in the intake.
Re: Cataclean
The website says it does also work with DI engines, so I have asked how this would be.

Re: Cataclean
Perfect explanation, thanks!! If you do your research before you buy one of these cars accept at some point you will need to do a de-coke, it goes with owning one, fact!!eljay wrote:Oil from the PCV (crankcase ventilation) is oily mist that goes back into the intake to be burnt. Re: Cataclean
Or don’t bother and just be happy with what you have got. Unless you are going to get it cleaned every year or two then it’s pointless getting it done just once.
Cheers
Re: Cataclean
I get mine done every year, as well as the full service.

Re: Cataclean
Only way it makes sense in my opinion but for me, the costs out way the gains of a yearly carbon clean.
Cheers
Re: Cataclean
Yep, been saying this for years. Accept the fact it has about 390ps without cleaning and just enjoy it.
Re: Cataclean
Nah, i'll pay for the carbon clean ta, and enjoy every horse under the bonnet, each too there own, its your car after all.
Re: Cataclean
Yep - no point in having an engine like that if you aren't going to keep it in tip-top condition.
