WHAT IS THIS ISSUE PLEASE ?

I just don't believe this, its one thing after another in my life at the moment and car problems are not helping.

So I was parked up chatting to a mate, engine running, as I lent over to open the glove box I just very slightly caught the gear stick and it very slightly made a crunch noise as cars to when you don't get it into gear correctly, the car didn't go into gear or jolt forward or anything like that and this may not have anything to do with my issue BUT this issue was apparent as I pulled away from dropping off my mate so as ive not had this problem before I am guessing it is ???

The problem,

So I have 1st and 2nd gear, 3rd will go in but now crunched into gear, 4th goes in but jumps straight out ? 5th and 6th perfectly fine, so what has happened please? im guessing its not the clutch as I have 4 perfectly good gears, lets just say 3rd now crunches because I caught the gear knob which in fairness I cant see doing this, and why it wont stay in 4th I have no idea.

Advice please lads,

Not my area of expertise but if I was to take a guess I'd say something wrong with the synchro mesh.

As Mike says, gear syncro rings would be one issue (crunching into gear) and then wear in the selector fork/mechanism for gears popping out. The gearbox would need to be removed and then sent off to a specialist for inspection. Quotes could vary hugely.

Cheapest way would most likely be source 2nd hand gearbox, but that will carry a risk of not knowing the true condition of gearbox number 2. Next option would be split out the work i.e. find a garage to remove and refit gearbox, then another place (specialist) to re-build the gearbox. Obviously you'd have to liaise with both parties.

The gearbox surely is not that fragile on these beasts?

Be interested to see how this ends up.

Fingers crossed for the OP

It's 100% a synchro issue. Where do you live as Central Axles in Brum are really good.

The rebuild will outweigh just buying this one. If serious pm me and il get a good deal as I know the owners of the salvage yard personally.

this can not be a wear issue as it has been working as new, ive had no issues or anything with this box until the other night ? very strange, ok ive had one quote so far as I thought I might as well get clutch fitted too BUT WTF, £2500 for clutch and flywheel surely that's not right? as for the box costs starts from £375 + vat depending on what they find inside but was advised to maybe get a second hand box but that's risky, these vary from £800 to £1500 so im unsure what to do here, any advice please as im really p---ed off now

I am in Bedfordshire, so is fixing the synchro cheaper than the box ? just wondering as not sure if its cheaper buying a 2nd hand box but it carries risks of course

ok just an update, a local gearbox company are test driving my car at 12pm today, they wreckon they can remove, refit and repair the box cheaper than a 2nd hand box, they also give 12 months warranty, so I may go down this road to be honest as at least if something is wrong after its fitted its the garage issue not mine, will update after the test drive

Clutch and Flywheel for £2,500... Is that about right? Does seem quite lumpy but I imagine the parts themselves are expensive.

I had the clutch and flywheel replaced and paid the following:

-LUK flywheel from Rock Auto £ 470 including shipping and import duty
-LUK Clutch kit, Release bearing, Master and slave cylinder £ 200.00 from Euro car parts during the 30% off promotion.
-Labour + small consumables was £ 503.00
Total £ 1173.00
