ok so it has been looked over, I went direct to a gearbox specialist rather than a middle man, he reckons that synchro on 3rd gear has gone, he also thinks that the fork must be slightly bent which isn't allowing the car to go fully into 4th that's why its jumping out, and advises a new clutch which im aware of anyway, he is ringing later with a quote, as for the clutch price I was given, I agree with the above two replies, £2500 seems a lot for a clutch and flywheel that's why I thought I would check with you, £1173 sounds more reasonable but lets see what this garage come back with....

I did do an online quote from Mr clutch for a new clutch, that came back as £575 ??? lol not sure how to take that price but if its under warranty then that's the best price ive seen, they do say they wont be beaten on price, anyway I wont be using them as I will need to use which ever garage undertake my gearbox work unless this quote is something stupid then I may get Mr Clutch to quote for gearbox too at those low prices

If you’re doing the clutch chances are the flywheel will need replacing too. You’ll be lucky to see any change out of £1200 and that’s if you source the parts and just pay labour.

ok I have this labour cost, can you guys look through it and tell me what you think, my concern is the fitting price as im already being qi=outed £330 labour to fix the box so unless im missing something im being charged £660 just to remove and replace the box? and I assume this means fitting the clutch too ? what do you all think ?

I have some prices for you.

FITTING (ASSUMING NO SIEZED FASTENERS/EXHAUST ETC) £660.00
BOX LABOUR £330.00
CLUTCH £160.00 APPROX
DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL £700.00 APPROX
PLUS PARTS IN GEARBOX, OIL, SUNDRIES, VAT
CAN SOMETIMES NEED SUNDRY CLUTCH FURNITURE SUCH AS FORK , PIVOT ETC.

I estimate this job inc VAT and a allowance on gearbox parts £2500 - £3000, considering I was quoted by a garage we all use £2500 just to replace the clutch then overall this don't seem too bad other than as I say I don't understand the amount for fitting

OK OFFICIALLY PISSED OFF NOW, my car has gone in for repairs, final cost will be £4000 and wont be done for another 2 weeks due to Audi taking min 7 days on parts.

so its apparently nothing to do with leaning on the gear stick, it just so happens that this fault happened at the same time

From what they can tell is the car has indeed been serviced ok over the years but the little things such as checking gearbox and diff oil has been over looked, so this has been running on low gearbox oil for a long long period far before I owned it 18 months ago. Without boring you with exact details basically, the plastic runners in the box melted, this caused some metal on metal and resulted in metal in the oil in the box ect ect, all in all inc the fact im having a brand new clutch and fly wheel fitted then its a £4000 bill.

NOW PLEASE TAKE NOTE : this car is stunning to look at, ive spent many thousands on mods, and the car has been very well maintained except someone has not bothered with the silly little things which has caused this issue, BUT I am having a brand new clutch, flywheel and rebuilt gearbox fitted so when I sell this car it should give many many years of use. WHICH IS MY POINT. Sadly I am now annoyed and I am looking to sell her in the new year so if anyone is interested please let me know via PM. yes she has these issues at present BUT its all being fixed by a specialist garage and I will have all receipts along with a 12 month warranty and as a new clutch is around £2500 depending on who does it then you will be getting a great car as the major works will have already been done, and as I say she has had many mods as well and I can assure you I don't want to sell her, but im at the point that its annoyed me and cost me a lot of money so im past the enjoying her stage and am at the pissed off stage so I think its time too move on from her.

So if anyone is looking to buy a RS4 in the new year / next year please contact me, and she looks and sounds amazing, that said I wont take stupid offers for her either especially as these cars are actually between holding money and going up in value at present, anyway if you think you may want her please contact me, I am not sure if there is a selling forum on here but I will look and maybe add her with photos in the new year. The picture of her in my thumbnail is literally 5 months old

ok just an update, a local gearbox company are test driving my car at 12pm today, they wreckon they can remove, refit and repair the box cheaper than a 2nd hand box, they also give 12 months warranty, so I may go down this road to be honest as at least if something is wrong after its fitted its the garage issue not mine, will update after the test drive
Sounds like a good approach, good luck

Hi mate
I recently had the same problem with my second gear popping outta gear! Found out it was the synchro rings needed replacing! So booked her in to mtg gearboxes in west London they charged me £600 for parts from Audi and £800 labour for removal and fitting of new rings! Plus I brought a clutch and flywheel from rock auto which cost £550 and also £300 on new updated pipes and all the little bits to put her back together so cost me £2250 which I think isn’t to bad at all!! Been driving a while now and she’s spot on 👍🏻

I do agree I think this is a lot of money, was told the flywheel is £900 ? anyway what can I do ? it was in pieces on the garage floor before the price went up £1000 ffs, they did say its all out if I wanted to come and inspect the damage, usually I would have if they didn't offer but as this company was happy for me to and look and asked 4 times was I sure then ive took there word for it and just need to pay the bill I suppose but not a happy bunny, and I don't think the master is being changed just clutch and fly wheel plus gearbox repairs of course. LESSON LEARNT EVERYONE CHECK THERE GEARBOX OIL ONCE IN A BLUE MOON LOL

UPDATE :

Still no car, not happy but apparently it will be don't Monday or Tuesday. They also found my crankshaft sensor was broken hmmmmm ok well they could have broke this while working on the car OR this could explin why on occasions my car doesn't start in which case I will be a happy bunny if that little issue has been solved too. Anyway fingers crossed that my car is in full running order and has been fixed to a high standard. They have had my car since Dec 3rd I think it was so I am not impressed with all this but lets see what tomorrow brings

OK WILL THIS EVER END ???

I have a few questions please

1st off I picked up the car today, I appreciate ive not had it in over 5 weeks + so I could be imagining this but I am sure the car is slightly down on power, and im sure its a bit lumpy in reverse, I will drive it for a week or two and see if everything settles in, other than that all seems ok. VERDICT...… had nothing to do with someone leaning on gear stick, more like the gear box oil was never checked on services and basically it ran so hot it melted the plastic teeth off some of the coggs inside which in turn allowed the metal coggs to move around a bit ect ect so all in all a very very expensive job all because someone didn't check the oil

I have a question about relays but will do another post
