2nd gear popping out help needed

Post by Sunshine88 » Sun Nov 11, 2018 12:26 am

Evening all
New to the group thanks for adding me
Got my first rs4 best thing I’ve ever done lol
Got a little problem tho........
as I put her in 2nd she stays in it fine going up the revs but when I let them drop back down in 2nd gear it pops outta gear and jerks back and forth and grinds like the clutch is trying to engaging!! Sometimes just pops outta gear without doing that!!!
Doesn’t happen all of the time tho and doesn’t do it in any other gears at all!! I’ve read around and could be the gear linkages are worn..... I’ve phoned around a bit and they’ve said could be the gear synchroniser but it’s only happening in one gear and the gearbox sounds fine 🤔 Apart from this the car is the bees knees!! I’m based in west London area and if anyone could suggest a good specialist or if not knows what’s happened would be great
Thanks for any help
Frank

Same Frank that posted on the owners Facebook page?

You should be getting same info as you got there, what you describe seems indeed a bad synchro which has come up as an issue in a few of these cars.

Good luck

Hey, no idea how much it would cost in the UK, I’d initially contact MRC and get a quote, also given the fact they’ll have to lower the transmission for this kind of work I’d look into also changing the clutch while your at it mate.

Hi, this is quite common on these style of gearboxes.

They are very similar to Porsche gearboxes which we repair on a daily basis.

We could get you a price if you like but are based in Cheshire...

Exactly the same thing happened on my sons. It was the 2nd gear synchro. Fortunately his was under Audi warranty and it was fixed accordingly. No idea of cost as it was fully covered.

Just checked and it’s roughly £500 plus vat for the parts for 2nd gear. This includes new gear synchro ring set and shift sleeve complete. To remove and re fit the gearbox can be 8 hours and then to strip and build the gearbox for 2nd gear would probably cost £800 plus vat so roughly £2k plus vat plus clutch and possibly flywheel and slave cylinder.

So I’m looking a £3000 bill for the work then with clutch fly wheel and a slave cylinder? I’ve literally had the car a week now and this didn’t happen on the test drive! Can this really happen all of a sudden?? And it’s only intermittent! Can de accelerate for while and it won’t happen then all of sudden it’ll pop out! And sometimes can be inbetween and your hear it grinding then I’ll press me foot on the clutch pedal and take it out of gear put it back in second and it’s fine 🤔😳

You can see if a flush/change in transmission fluid can help but by what you have described it definately reads as a synchro issue which is a common item on these cars, check and see if buying the parts in the US will work out less expensive for you...

Did you get some sort of warranty with the vehicle?
