Tin worm
Tin worm
I've had a tiny bit of corrosion on the front driver's side wheelarch, just above the side valance at the rear of the wheel. Seemingly successfully treated, but looks as though it's bubbling just the tiniest amount again. A known issue? Any comments?
Cheers.

Re: Tin worm
Ring Audi UK they will repair under warranty with a contribution from you provided it hasn’t been repaired at some point.12th wrote:I've had a tiny bit of corrosion on the front driver's side wheelarch, just above the side valance at the rear of the wheel. Re: Tin worm
I might do that. It has been treated externally (i.e. repainted to a very high standard) but the car hasn't been damaged if that's what you mean.

Re: Tin worm
The arch liners rub the paint away on the inside of the arches and water and dirt works its way under the paint, causing the bubble you are seeing.
Audi replaced both my front wings under the 12 year paint work warranty because both wing were original paint.
The rear arches did the same a year later but Audi refused to cover the left rear because it had been painted at some point.
The actually got their own paintwork specialist in to measure the paint thickness on that side of the car.
So, if you have had paintwork done, Audi are unlikely to consider a warranty claim. The dealership makes a difference as well, Edinburgh Audi could not have cared less but Perth Audi went out of their way to push the claim through for me.
Probably a good idea to get the inside of all the arches checked along with the rear subframe for corrosion if you are planning on keeping the car longterm.

Re: Tin worm
OK, thanks for that. The paintwork was just a very minor touch-up and done in the last few months, so I reckon a claim is worth a go. Twelve years is up in January! Might help that I am the original owner, and I do intend to keep it.
Cheers.

Re: Tin worm
Just to be clear there is no 12 year paint warranty. It’s three years and if it has been painted by anyone other than Audi it is void. The 12 years people refer to is body panels but...that actually (when you read it) refers to internal seams not anything external.12th wrote:OK, thanks for that. That’s why they ask for a contribution as they usually agree to do it as a good Will gesture. Be warned, they don’t have to do it all all.
12 year paint and body warranty doesn’t exist in the from people believe it does, it’s very specific.

Re: Tin worm
When you say rot? Do you mean rust?
If so, the arches are aluminium so this shouldn't happen.
Be interested to know otherwise.

Re: Tin worm
You are correct, the front arches are aluminium alloy but the paint will still bubble and lift when water and dirt gets in.

Re: Tin worm
Audi replaced both my wings due to corrosion they specifically mentioned the 12 year perforation warranty so this is what they seem to be using to justify the claims.Jon_J wrote: ↑Thu Nov 08, 2018 6:03 pm

Re: Tin worm
Absolutely correct, they are using it but it isn’t actually covered. All I’m saying is they can say no if they want as it is not covered.MB2 wrote:Audi replaced both my wings due to corrosion they specifically mentioned the 12 year perforation warranty so this is what they seem to be using to justify the claims.Jon_J wrote: ↑Thu Nov 08, 2018 6:03 pm

I have spoken to and even advised several members about how to get this work done so they definitely will do it.

Re: Tin worm
I'm going to ring them shortly and get the car booked in to see what they think. I guess my fear was that the panel itself would be corroding from within, as cars did of yore, but whilst I knew they were aluminium I hadn't figured this out as improbable. Just had a crown fall out too, so need a dentist as well. I'm hoping there's no third thing...
Cheers!

Re: Tin worm
Well, booked in so we'll see what we see. I guess I'm reassured that an aluminium panel should be rather less prone than a steel one.
Fingers crossed, eh?

Re: Tin worm
You’ll be fine. Unless it has visible damage or a bad repair before they will more likely offer something.12th wrote:Well, booked in so we'll see what we see. I guess I'm reassured that an aluminium panel should be rather less prone than a steel one.

Dealership took a look and forwarded photos to Audi UK yesterday, so we'll see where we go.
Thanks for the pointers.
