Notchy/crunchy downchange to 2nd

Post by super7 » Tue Oct 16, 2018 7:00 pm

Having a crunch/notchy downchange into 2nd gear every single time. At first I thought it was me but it’s ever single downchange. Awful grinding noise like the clutch isn’t engaged properly - only 2nd gear.

Any ideas or anyone had the same problem?

My son had exactly the same problem. Luckily his was still in warranty and Audi covered the cost. The problem was the 2nd gear syncromesh. Fully gearbox removal and rebuild.

Oh no.......

That would be the case when I’m 12 days out of warranty. What was the damage?

Dunno cost cause Audi did it. Where are you based. I have a friend in Brum that all he does is rebuilding gearboxes.

I’m down in Brighton... little out of the way for Brum but I’d take the details thanks.

For info. I had a gearbox rebuild and replace 3rd gear synchro.
Think it was about £1600 all in about 3 years ago.

Cheers for that and.... ouch. Big bill then. Certainly sounds like that’s what it’ll need. Can’t believe I’m days out of warranty too. Sod’s law!

It got delivered on April 2nd, I bought it from Sytner BMW in Coventry with a 6 month warranty. It expired on Oct 2nd. I don’t think I’ve got any recourse there? Unless others have been successful post warranty?

Give them a call, can only say no.
Maybe see if they'll give you a goodwill gesture for part of the bill.

Which warranty company is it, see if you can extend it. You could say you’d been expecting an in ertation to extend but not received anything yet so you’re chasing it up.

Whats your mileage? Mine started this, and it turned out to be the clutch.

I would recommend having the clutch bled first and take it from there. For info, i had no clutch slippage, only issue engaging.
