Warped Disks

Post by super7 » Tue Sep 04, 2018 8:35 pm

So possibly a rookie error here. Breaks have been giving a slight vibration when breaking 80-100mph range. Only had them on the car for 2k miles (had them changed as part of the deal when buying). Took it to campsec and they confirmed my thoughts - warped disks. They said it was likely after a hard drive i've sat on the break pedal too long at the lights or something - well now I know, handbrake!

I managed to jump on the europe-parts sale and got a front pair 50% off. Only saving grace here.

I recall reding somewhere (i've used search but couldn't find) that you can get disks resurfaced. Given the young age of the disks and that the vibration wasn't too bad (more annoying than anything), I was wondering if with the pair coming off it would be worth it? Hoping someone with some experience of it may be able to provide a steer?

Who are campsec?
Have you tried drilling out the holes and giving the brakes a really good clean. Just sitting on the brakes at the lights won't warp your disks. This has been covered to death in this forum. Mine rumble like fcuk on the drive home from Germany after I've been to the Nurburgring. I do the above and they are fine.

They’re an RS specialist in Crawley. Been pretty good so far.

I’ve not tried that redrilling/cleaning. Rumbling sounds about right, it was a judder through the steering wheel. Not a major vibration.

Regarding the cleaning, what do you use to clean them up? The redrilling do you use a specific drill bit type?

Wheels off, brake cleaner and a damn good jet wash, round the back of the calliper and do down through the disc vents (rotate them) too after drilling them out and watch the dust that comes out. Use a normal drill bit that fits snug, I can't remember mm size.

Spot on thanks! I’ll give that a bash first, if it works out I can send the disks back.

I used a drill bit and twisted it in by hand. 6mm seems to ring a bell but could be wrong.

My front wheels do get dusty very quickly. Didn't think about clearing the holes and vents, will be giving this a go

I had mine skimmed at £170. I had a brake peddle play when braking guess its called warping. After the disc skim they have been like new. Due to the discs being so thick it possible to do this. I think they only removed 1mm each side of the disc.
Definatly worth doing..

I was quoted £240 to do all four and fit the supplied pads, i ended up buying new discs and pads all round though as there wasnt enough left on the discs to make it worthwhile

Can't have removed 1mm per side or that would have made them go below the minimum thickness! Only 2mm of a difference between a new disc and a worn one. I had the rear discs skimmed at a local garage at £60 for the pair and they fitted brake pads I supplied as well. Made a huge difference.
