Boot size

Post by FrazerD » Sat Aug 11, 2018 1:11 pm

Hi folks,

I am on the look out for an RS4 avant. I am trying to make a grown up decision rather than “because I want one” so here is my query. We have two Rhodesian Ridgebacks and we are hoping to have kids in the future too although that’s a few years off. I know that the dogs will be fine with the seats down or with the boot and our luggage on the back seats but could I realistically have kids in the back, dogs in the boot and everything else in a roof box?

I am hoping so as my way of thinking is that regardless wether we had a fiesta or a disco, the dogs would be in the boot and forcing the luggage to the back seats or if there were kids there, to a roof box.

Just after some real life experience and views. I know a lot of you will say keep kids and dogs out an RS4 but if I did that, it wouldn’t get used and end up with the same fait as my M3 coupe and being sold.

Cheers

You definitely could. The roof boxes are a good size for storage.

Do you have any experience with a roof box or dogs/kids in an RS4? I have been looking at Thule boxes as I think they offer the widest range and look the best too. Was looking at a Motion XT Sport but it’s only 300l and think I would need bigger. Looking at a Motion XT large or even extra large.

I know it may seem like I am over thinking it as it’s a few years off and haven’t even bought an RS4 yet but just want to do things right.

I've got two kids (3year old and 4 and half year old). Personally there's not that much space in the back compared to newer cars (my dad bought a new ibiza and there's more legroom in that the rs4!). Is used as a daily car by my wife but we also have a people carrier (my company car). The rs4 replaced a leon st and it had far more boot space. When the kids are young and you have buggies etc to go with them you'll need a bigger roof box I reckon. We went to a wedding in Ireland with the Leon when the kids were younger and filled the boot in that and a 380l roof box .

Thanks for that. I should of said that we have got a pathfinder that my other half uses for her work so we have that to use too but the same story of the dogs being in the boot so a roof box would be needed regardless what we have. I think I will just have to cross the bridge when I come to it and I see you can hire roof boxes so might not be a bad idea to see about size and what I would realistically need.

I have come across plenty of threads about roof boxes being used but they were all slightly smaller due to the boot being used too. Would like to see it being done without the boot being used.

I would imagine so, mind likes to take everything we need and the stairs.

Only problem with your situation is where the dogs are going to go.

Not an RS4 but I used to have a BMW E46 330d sport touring. Back then my 2 boys were teenagers and we used to drive from Birmingham to Lake Garda, Italy,1115 miles door to door. I used to have the long thin Thule roof box on it and we didn’t put much in the boot cause it would disrupt the bassline from the 12 inch subwoofer in the back. We packed enough clothes for 2 weeks into the roof box for 4 people which I suppose wasn’t a lot as it was summer clothes. Nevertheless the 2 boys had plenty of leg room (similar amount to an RS4). We used to pack all the clothes in the box in bin liners so by manipulating the bags into all the useable space. That way you can put a lot in there.
Current ride’s

The inside of a properly spec'd RS4 (buckets etc) is not a commodious place. There is little room for child seats in the back if you're over 6ft (probably over 5'8") and the boot is not that big.

Consider it a 2+2 with easy access doors and a (slightly) bigger boot.

Thanks to you both for your input although I am now more confused than ever :?

Surely an RS4 can be used as a family car wether it has buckets or comforts. I have been pondering this over the weekend, I need an avant for the space and although both the saloon and avant look great, I personally prefer the avant which is a bonus so if I go ahead and buy one then I’m sure I can cross any bridge when I get to it. If it means that we take the pathfinder or equivalent for longer journeys/holidays then so be it but surely I can use an RS4 avant for day to day use for dogs or kids and both.

I just want to be as sensible as possible before buying one as it’s alot of money and I’m trying to be a grown up rather than a boy :assflash: I have looked at RS6’s but I’m not as drawn to the C5 and can’t afford a C6.

Any more input and or photos are more than welcome.

He's right, I can get the baby seat in the back but it has to go behind the Mrs as she's shorter than me. Would be a bit cramped if it needed to go behind me.

Have heard there is more space behind the comfort seats but they were never an option for me.

I think the boot is big enough though!

Thanks for your input. I have been thinking about it and when we were younger, maybe 8-12ish, as a family car we had a 5dr mk2 Punto for 4 of us. I know times have changed but if my old boy can make do with a Punto, I can surely make do with an RS4 avant for 2 dogs just now and possibly kids in the future. If not, I’ll give it a damn good shot and have some fun in the mean time.

As I have said above, I’m sure I’m not the only one that would use an avant for kids and dogs. Thanks again for all your replies.

Cheers
