Numerous RS4 Issues & Faul Codes - Help!

Post by Nicklondon » Mon Jul 09, 2018 1:35 pm

Dear all,

I bought a lovely B7 RS4 a couple of months back and it's been a wonderful car - I get the hype! Anyway, I've come across quite a number of issues I wondered if you guys could help me with, nothing serious just need to make sure that whoever I choose to carry out the work is doing the right thing. To give you an explination the main issue, I have the EPC light going on and off and when it's on she does't want to accelerate and it missfires a lot, definetely feels like not enough fuel (plugs and coils etc. all good). Please see a list of codes below, I think it's a shot high pressure fuel pump and possible o2 sensors? (also a knackered engine mount)

5391 (P1573) Electro/Hydraulic Engine Mounting Left, Solenoid - N144 OPEN CIRCUIT Sporadic
4764 (P129C) Fuel pressure regulating valve bank 2, short to earth sporadic
81(P0051) Bank 2 -- probe1, Heating circuit short to earth Sporadic
87 (P0057) Bank 2 probe 2, heating circuit short to earth Sporadic
5173 (P1435) Secondary air pump relay - J299 Short Circuit to earth Sporadic - MIL on
5153 (P1421) Secondary Air Inlet Valve - N112 Short Circuit to earth Spodaric - MIL on
5494 (P1576) Engine Mounting Valve. Right - N145 Short to earth - MIL on
8853 (P2295) Fuel pressure regulating valve short to earth Spordic - MIL on
49 (P0031) Bank 1 Probe 1, heating circuit short to earth Sporadic - MIL on

Thanks so much in advance - sorry I know there's quite a few codes there!!

Nick.

The codes mean little to me (but look like something serious is up tbh) but my view is this... I'd get a decent specialist onto it. If you don't have one then I'd be asking for recommendations..

A starter from me if you are in the South Midlands is APS in Brackley. They look after mine but I've also used MRC in Banbury (brilliant reputation, slightly gruffer 'blokey' service but I am sure you can deal with that...).

Good luck!

I would like to try and resolve some of the issues myself, for example if one or both of the high pressure fuel pumps need changing it's a very easy job which will save me a bit of money. Any help on any of the codes would be greatly appreciated.

I had one of the fuel pumps go last year (there are two), and if it's that, the problem will not go away when warm. If it goes away, it may be inlet manifold related as the flaps seem to loosen with temperature. The error codes were not helpful in diagnosing the fuel pump issue, so don't put too much faith in them.

MRC are great, APS I've only used re clutch, and they didn't spot the solution to a sticking clutch pedal after hard use, which is nothing more complex than changing the fluid for that with a higher boiling point. It may well need a carbon clean and other fettling, so do seriously consider passing the car over to MRC for a couple of days if you can't solve it.

Nick.

looks like an electrical fault, everything is open circuit or short to ground. every fault on that list is on the engine wiring loom.

i had the exact same thing on mine it turned out to be the the unused plug from the air box flap (mine is unused because im running a different air inlet) had fell onto the exhaust manifold and melted through the wires and caused the short to ground that in turn blew a fuse causing the same symptoms as yours.

have a look for any trapped wires in the engine bay, check the wire that goes to the air box flap see if its still used or if its not make sure its not been damaged. check your fuses.

Thanks very much for your responses - I forgot to mention the car has been decoked in the last year and also deflapped - I suspect this could be the cause of the issue?

hi mate got your pm.

the only way the decoke and deflapping could cause this is if when removing and refitting the manifold they have caught the wiring loom and damaged it.

your faults are all short to ground, the positive feed on the loom that feeds all the things you listed is somewhere going to earth. your faults are listed as sporadic which is suggesting that its not making permanent contact just touching every now and again.

your symptoms were exactly the same as mine apart from my faults were not sporadic it was a permanent short to ground as my wires were melted together.
