MRC Tune

Post by super7 » Tue Jun 05, 2018 9:54 pm

Having had my RS4 for about a month now, I discovered some paperwork in the glovebox that wasn’t part of what I reviewed as part of the sale.

I was surprised to find my car had had a MRC stage 2 remap and some other work. Having used the search on the forum seems this is pretty common. 1st and 2nd gear in sport mode are quite twitch unless you’re fullly ‘ON’ the throttle. What I wasn’t sure about was the other work removing the inlet manifold, valve cleaning & de flap inlet manifold. Was hoping someone on here may know more?

Here’s some pics of the invoice and dyno readings:

It’s had a carbon clean, manifold deflap and stage 2 tune. Part of the tune is full throttle in all gears when sport mode is engaged that’s why it is twitchy. They will also have removed he cold start. Stops it being so noisy when you first start it.

Why need to tell the insurance if your car carbon cleaned or remapped? All my previous car was remapped but never told to insurance company.

Because it’s a modification. You don’t have to tell them but if you write it off and they check the ECU for modifications they won’t pay out. Not a penny.

The carbon clean isn’t an issue. Seems a bit of a strange response. I’d have thought it was obvious?

Thanks John_J! That clears it up. Wonder what what the insurance hit will be....

Worth it whatever the case. Had I not found the paper I’d not have known. Could have been sticky situation if I had a bump and they’d checked the ECU - does that happen much?

I love the power delivery in gear. Need to get some of the 99 Ron fuel in it. Just been using 95 so far.

Yes it will definitely be mapped to use 99.

Also 99 will help keep the carbon down.

It really depends on your insurance company, it made little difference to mine, they didn’t even go into any detail, just ticked a box to say engine tuned. I have heard a few people who have had the ECU downloaded and checked. In my opinion it’s not worth the risk. Cover everything, then if the worst happens you are covered without issues.

If the car is new to you, maybe check suspension too, see if that has been modified, it’s another notifiable change for the insurance. If you’re not sure what a standard car should be maybe meet someone with knowledge of these cars to understand exactly what you have.

Happy to help where I can.

Now I know I’ll update them. Thanks for your help. Going to go for 99 in the next tank - that won’t be long I’m averaging 180 miles a fill up.

I took the car to Campsec for their health check and the DRC system is still intact. Overall they said the car was in pretty original condition and a ‘good one’ as they put it.

They said that the DRC will go at some point (I’ve read a fair bit on here on the topic). I’m on the fence to maintain it or swap it out. I do like that it’s quite original so it’s weather or not to maintain that. What did you do with yours?

That’s what I was thinking.... if it goes multiple times I’d probably kick myself. Got to love the engineering aspect of the DRC which is similar to FRIC that they banned in F1. But it just seems temperamental and potential money pit.

I love the drc. Amazing. But out of my budget to repair again and again.

when i did my carbon clean and head flowed and ported with the remap i informed my insurance
but because the gain was from 420 to 445 PS a gain of 6% so with that there was not much more to pay on my insurance i think it went up £30
the biggest gain on the tune was the torque from 430 NM to 479 NM

Are you aware of the small button just next to the fuel inlet? Have a close look inside the fuel filler flap. That button does something like allow the air in the fuel tank to bleed more quickly (or similar, someone will be along with a batter description than that). If you toggle that button up or down immediately after you've filled the tank but before returning the pump nozzle to it's holder you should be able to get about another 7-8 litres into the tank. Ups the range quite significantly.
