Headlight replacement

Post by MB2 » Wed Mar 28, 2018 8:30 pm

Can anyone suggest the best place to buy a new headlight ?

One of my headlights is new (2016) and the other is original. Since the car is going into Audi for some paintwork I was going to have the old headlight swapped whilst it is there.

I remember some people bought headlights from allparts or somewhere like that but haven't found anything when looking myself.

From memory these are very expensive - £600 or so rings a bell.

The lenses/clear covers can be replaced easily at a fraction of the cost (ebay for an old light or there is a firm making just these).

How do the lenses come off, do you have to put them in the oven to melt the glue?

Get a heat gun or hair drying and gently heat around the edge of the seal and gently prise apart. Don't heat too much as you will melt the casing.
When finished re-assembling, finally sillycunt around the seal for extra sealing. I didn't do this to mine and my lenses misted up so need to repeat the process.

The company was Allparts Southwest but they have recently re-branded and no longer show the headlight in their online Shop. I'm sure they will still be able to get them though, from memory it was around £300 per headlight and you just needed to swap the Xenon bulb and balast over from your old one. They come direct from Magneti Marelli in their packaging.

Thanks for the help - unfortunately because the car will be at Audi I am a bit limited in what I can do with the headlights themselves. The left one has flickered a few times and went out a couple of times too last weekend so I think makes sense to change the ballast and probably the headlight as polishing hasn't restored it and console myself that the "free" labour offsets the cost.

I rang all parts south west but they said had never sold A4 headlights (although I remember the thread)...

Is TPS worth a go or is it likely time to bite the bullet with Audi ?

Sounds like you spoke with a jobsworth; here's the confirmation email I had if it's any use:

My sprint blue car was a facelift and had clear lights from factory. The headlights I purchased were for my Black one, that had been de-tango'd, but was done by a monkey who broke the lenses when splitting them.

Plenty of my blue car pics in this thread - the later Pistonheads photo shoot probably shows them the best.

Hi guys could do with a bit of advice please.Ive just bought a b7 estate and have been looking for a set of 19" rotor alloys to replace the 20" ronal alloys. It took me 1 week to find one of the many potholes where i live and blew a tyre.My plan is to go back down to original 19" and use 40 profile tyres. There are loads of sets on ebay but im not sure what offset/width/stud pattern i need.Im pulling my hair out messaging people on ebay. There are plenty on there but dont want to get the wrong ones.I also need a good contact for a valve top carbon clean if anyone knows one. Thanks Tim

I hope you’re not talking about the headlights you sold me Sam?
