Timing chain replacement

Post by grantc » Fri Feb 16, 2018 6:44 pm

I have just read that Audi recommend that the timing chain is replaced between 50 and 100k miles at a cost of £6k (main dealer prices)

Can anybody verify this or have any experience of having it changed and how much please?

Thanks

Thought this was just the s4 v8 engine that needed the chains doing at that mileage

The rs4 v8 timing chains/engines are built to last till 150k "on paper" according to audi I believe, and as mentioned above its the a4 v8 that suffered from timing chain issues and need replacing much sooner, do you have a link as to where you read this, cheers.

i have never read any where the chains had to be replaced the guides yes but not the chains but high milers it might be worth while but a hell of an expense

I think they are supposed to be done at 155,000 but when I asked my local indie they said just to leave them until they start getting noisy.

Think I am about 28 miles short of hitting that figure.

Will post an update next week when the engine blows up.

Thanks for the replies guys. It's not something I'm concerned about. Just thought I would ask the question bearing in mind I hadn't heard about it before. Seems like the facts aren't strictly correct on honest john then.

I think the S4 engine used plastic parts on the guides or possibly the tensioners which is why they had issues failing once they had higher mileage on them.

On the RS4 these parts were made of metal so not an issue.

I remember reading about a B7 RS4 in Germany that had over 200,000 miles on it (and still going strong) that was still on its original chains.

+1 on this! It's the v8 fitted to the s4 and others where guides/tensioners are on borrowed time 80k upwards - probably why you can pick up s4's for next to nothing these days as they're nearly all high milers.

I had a B6 S4 and the chains started to rattle at 60k. So off loaded in part ex for my 1st RS4. You know when they start to rattle, especially on a cold start.

Good to know Cov, hopefully I don't hear the rattle for a few years yet but it will need doing one day.

Lovely looking RS4, dark blue was always my first choice of colour.

Well I'm going to run mine into the ground and whatever needs fixing it will be fixed. I hope I've still got it when I'm 77 like my grandad who had a 2.8i Special Capri and a 1.9 205 GTi on fully comprehensive any driver. He was such a top grandad as he used to let me and my brother drive them both.
