Ball Joint Gaiters perished

Post by Dolphie » Thu Dec 07, 2017 3:45 pm

Looking for some advice folks. Just had my car serviced and have an advisory about the front lower ball joint gaiters being perished. The last MOT also picked this up. Audi want an arm and a leg to replace. My knowledge of suspension is extremely limited, but they seem to want to replace arms, c links etc.

So my questions are:

Are these likely to fail the MOT soon or cause any problems with the suspension?

Do I need to replace all the stuff listed by Audi or can the ball joints and gaiters be replaced separately by an indie?

Thanks.

Gaiter boots and clamps are not expensive and can be replaced by any reputable garage. Just make sure that they use the correct CV crimping tool to tighten the clamps. Whilst they are off get the garage to inspect your ball joints. They are more than likely ok as if they had gone they would make a hell of a racket.

Thanks Covkiller. I'll speak to my local guy armed with that knowledge.

I understand it's something the MOT is tightening up on, so I suspect many will face this issue soon.
