Hi all currently looking at an 06 plate rs4 with what's described as 'the gearbox has gone' Anybody had or know of a possible issue? Cost to replace or possible other problem it could be....clutch failure? Thanks

Having said that, you could simply look for a car with a gearbox that 'hasn't gone'.

What else is "gone" would be my issue as you wont be able to drive it before handing over your pennies, it could well have all sorts of noises and issues that you'll only find out about when you get it driving, I'd personally run away from it but I'm boring like that, plus with a poor description of "gone" would raise my suspicions of why he's being so vague

It’s very rare for these gearbox’s to give in unless the car has been heavily abused. I think I’ve seen the car on eBay?

The diff is gone and the shaft that goes in there are broken so you need to remove your shaft to this gearbox, so you need to open both gearboxes...

Well, my 103k car has not been abused - I bought it from new but for the last few months it crunched changing down to 2nd and now it sometimes pops out of 2nd on acellerating - bit of a pain when pulling onto a roundabout! I'm about to go back to Japanese having had jap cars that never went wrong until buying the RS in 2006. Its gotta be cheaper than replacing/repairing the gearbox... I recon its cost me 50k to run it so far, including timing chain guide failing at 55k (£2.5K) oil cooler, decoke, DRC, exhaust and a few bits 2015 (£11k), pads and disks made of silver alloy (why are they so soft and expensive then?) and a string of electrical glitches. So a fabulous car to drive but a pain to own....

I had a gearbox rebuild & 3rd gear synchro replace for about £1500 including labour to drop the box and refit if that helps.
