Ceramics - front and rear?

Post by Bund » Sat Nov 04, 2017 6:26 pm

This car description states ceramic front brakes, is it just a weak description and has ceramic rears too?

I just found a great car on Auto Trader:

Does that mean they were a retro fit,if they came from factory could you spec fronts only or did you have to get a full set?

I haven’t known another brand to put ceramics only on the front when ordered from New.

As stated the B7 only had an option for front ceramics, no rears.

Audi only made ceramic brakes /calipers for the front I believe, they would be pretty useless on the rear (although would look nice) most of the brake bias/stopping power will be directed at the front 70% front 30% back, at a guess?

Certainly right about brake biass and I guess unsprung weight mass of the rear steels isn’t a big deal, it’s just that Porsche/Ferrari/Lambo/Aston do all 4 I’m pretty sure, I just thought that was the standard.

So the Cars a very good spec then for the money.

I suppose in 2006/7 when these rs4 were made ceramics were the latest/newest thing and not that common, nowadays you would have to expect them as standard especially cars you mentioned, they do look nice tho!

Most of the other cars you mention have the engine in the rear, so bit more bias towards the rear to let the brakes do some work
Current - 07 Avus Silver B7 RS4 Avant : Ceramics, Non Valved Non Res Milltek, K&N filter, SS+, adaptive xenons, black optics, KW3, 034 rear ARB, rear drop links & front adjustable top arms.
Past - 00 Saxo VTS : 266mm Mi16 calipers, Quaife ATB, 20mm torsions bars, 24mm ARB, Vibratechnics mounts
87 Vauxhall Belmont: 1.6L, 15" rockford fosgate subwoofer in 3 cuft sealed box, 5ch Rockford fosate amp, JBL components

Again valid, so what did Audi charge for just front ceramics?

The car in question didn’t come with these from new, they checked the spec.

For the ceramics with calipers it was a £4235 optional extra from Audi when bought new. A lot of people have retro fitted these, as would be the case with the car you mentioned.

You won't find ceramic brakes standard on all of these, its almost always an option.

Thanks Dougie, I suppose manafacutures are still milking the Ceramic Brakes "cow" until they
come up with the next big thing, but the money you pay for top end performance cars you would expect them as standard, just my opinion of course.

Certainly standard now on Ferrari, has been since 2008 I believe but I don’t know about lambo’s and certainly not standard on Aston’s.

Rear ceramics will also double the cost of the option. The RS6 ceramic option which is front and rear was abut 10k.
