New RS4 Owner! Some help needed! Noisy first gear?

Post by gdgd » Thu Sep 28, 2017 10:42 am

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for having me. Picked up my b7 RS4 on Saturday and have been loving it! 50k miles and full Audi history - she is lovely! :D

Something bothering me though... I'm getting a rotational sounding humming noise in first gear, almost a bit like a dull sounding wheel bearing, most noticeable if you are travelling along at 2.5k rpm. Dip the clutch or move up into second and the noise disappears. It also gets faster as the revs rise. Anyone else have this? All gears engage perfectly, nothing untoward other than this noise.

Thanks!

-Grant

Does it still make the noise if you take it out of gear and put it in neutral?

No noise with the clutch down or if coasting in neutral.

You sure it's not just the Quattro drivetrain?

That's the thing @Pistolpete I've never driven a Quattro so wouldn't know. I guess what I'm asking other member is does 1st gear make more of a noise than other gears?

p.s the car is booked in with a specialist this Saturday but I hate not knowing if this is a problem or not :(

I haven't noticed any difference in sound between first and the other gears.

Thanks for the reply Bill. I'm starting to suspect my first gear may have something wrong :( Ever heard of box problems at 50k miles?

I can't remember reading about any problems with the B7's gearbox. Keep us posted. Hopefully it's something simple (and cheap). :)

Would be my luck... pioneering the breakage of an unbreakable gearbox. I'll post back once I have more info.

In the meantime any one who has had anything similar please let me know!

On my first b7 Rs4 gearbox flywheel and clutch gone at 20k all replaced under warranty six months later another flywheel so gearbox going is not unheard of and it made a similar noise to what you described.... good luck hopefully it ain't that

Only in first gear? Post a video up. Is everything stock on the car or do you have mods? Updated oil cooler, etc?

You sure this is not the noise of the timing chains on the engine as they are at the back near the bulkhead so you will hear them going steady in 1st
The chains are a little noisy on these engines so dont worry if you find out it to be that.
