The metal trim round the windows????

Post by Bund » Tue Sep 26, 2017 6:38 pm

I was fairly close to buying a high ish mileage RS4 saloon but a few cosmetic issues came to light on the 2nd viewing, one is likely to be sorted being a damaged front bumper but the metal trim round all the windows has gone milky in colour. The chap said this was common but i haven't noticed it before but then again I haven't seen loads up close. Is it common, can it be treated?

A friend from the forum has been helping me with what to look for's, i'd say the car passed all of them and for £12k ish its had a recent DRC system put in place so big bills have been paid but it looks tired on the outside but mechanically its good. I doubt ill find another even with half the mileage that's had Audi DRC parts fitted in the last 6 weeks so should i just swallow the shabby appearance and be comfortable knowing i've got 2 years warranty on the drc system?(excluding pipes as done in 2012) Its missing the service book but nearly all the service invoices(gap for a few years but MOT looks to confirm), it has buckets and FBSW and Latest RNS-E 3G system fitted.

I'd consider paying more for a like for like car in better condition but going to be hard to find a car with such recent DRC replacement all round?

I have seen it on quite a few b7s not just rs4 models were the trim has gone milky coloured, there’s not much that can be done. Most wrap or paint it black.
That does sound really cheap, what’s the mileage? Drc is expensive to replace, most when it goes faulty just put coilovers on and can forget about it then, it’s what I did with mine

It's done about 100k and bills came to £5000 for the DRC overhaul.

It's not for sale at 12k but a deal can be done around that, it's due a service on time alone, missing the service book although has lots of invoices, paint I'd say is normal for any 100k that's probably been left on streets around a London so scratched and milky metal and needs paint correction on rear bumper. The guy has looked after it mechanically it's just showing sign of living on a street.

That's a deal. Buckets and FBSW alone are worth $5k in the States.

I am about to get my windows wrapped to match the colour of the mirrors.
Cost around £220 at most.

Any RS4 at £12k is a steal.

Not loads offered at 12k or below but I think plenty would take that kind of money. The cost of repairs haven't dropped in line with the values so something is giving and unfortunately it's looking to be the residuals.

It is wheel cleaner or similar that attacks the allumnium so yes it must be quite common. Mine has a few spots from this and there is nothing that can be done really. If the rest of the car looks good then I would go for it - you can either wrap them on before that I would try allibrite or something similar to strip the remaining anodising off and then polish them every few months with autosol maybe.

Mine annoy me but just a few spots so I live with them, but I have used allibrite to remove anodising before it will leave it quite white but should polish up (they use it for cleaning truck beds) but maybe test on a piece of scrap trim first ?

Try using acf50 . It's not a permanent solution but makes it look a lot lot better . I apply ( spray a bit on a cloth and wipe over ) . every time I wash the car .
