Hunter alignment

Post by y700suf » Tue Aug 22, 2017 11:03 pm

Any recommendations for a hunter alignment specialist?

Having had to replace a punctured tyre, I got the supplying garage to rotate the wheels but they have managed to fit them back on in such a way that the car vibrates at speeds between 60mph and 80mph.

In case useful, I have 265/30/20s on RS5 rotors fit on to my B7 with 3mm spacers on the front. Rear is standard.

For hunter alignment go to www.alignmycar.com.uk

However, sounds like a balancing issue; either the tyre hasn't been balanced properly or they haven't fitted the spacers properly. 3mm spacers will not be hubcentric so liable to be fitted slightly off centre and cause wobble.
Also, the rotors have a bigger centre bore so should be used with spigots to stop any vibrations. So do you have any fitted and if so are you sure they didn't get left off when wheels were removed?
I'd be surprised if this was an alignment issue if it wasn't do it before the repair. Take the wheels off and check for spigots then take spacers off and try driving without them to see if they caused the problem.

I can thoroughly recommend CamSpec in Crawley:

As Mike says, sounds like a wheel balancing issue though.

Very helpful, thanks guys.

Spigots definitely on there but I suspect you're right about the spacers MikeFish.

Is fitting the spacers more art than science, i.e. need to judge by eye? Presumably any decent tyre Shop can do this in most cases?

I've only ever used thicker ones so have been hub centric to avoid this issue. Not sure how you'd get a non hubcentric one to align properly other than by trial and error. Maybe the wheel sellers have a special tool or method to make sure it sits central but I don't know how.

More than likely it's just the fact your rear wheels had been out of balance previously, you wouldn't feel it so much at the back but now they're on the front you can feel it through the steering wheel, happens all the time when customers ask for wheels to be rotated and ignore my advise of having the wheels balanced at the same time, then they come back the following day and i laugh at them (I'm nice like that)

Fun and games, the wheels were re-balanced for their new positions so the issue is more with the spacers as MikeFish describes.

Thanks for responses.

Were abouts in London are you? I got mine done today by Maidenhead Tyres. They have the hunter setup and are really good.
