B7 RS4 Gearbox question

Hello All,

I had my car serviced this week and my mechanic reckons that the synchromesh might be worn on my gearbox. Apparently it now is a bit of a gamble whether it will need work (I've only just bought the car), as the gearbox is 'clipping' between 1st and 2nd, but the 'clipping' is slight and very intermittent (every 7 or 8 changes from 1st to 2nd, sometimes more) so it may not need to be properly looked at for another 20k or 30k miles, but as I'm planning to take the car on track days and probably drive it hard, what's everyone's opinion on getting it sorted now?

As I've only had the car less than 2 weeks I may take it back to the stealer and see if that will sort it under my statutory rights. I just wanted to know if anyone has experienced this, or am I and my mechanis just being paranoid and all RS4's do this?

Thanks,

TK

No mine is smooth but I try an oil change 1st or definitely go back to the dealer as this would be under your warranty how many miles it done?

Hi mate, it's done 80,000 miles. I'll definitely be giving them a call ASAP and see what they say. It is smooth 90% of the time, it's just an occasional 'clip' (not sure of the technical term) changing between the 2 gears

Normally these boxes are bulletproof unless beaten.

This sounds exactly the same as my sons B7 RS4. It's like a slight clunk as you change into 2nd almost like you haven't pushed the clutch down enough. My son had only had the car a month and he took it back to Birmingham Audi (supplying stealer) and the tech tried to blag him and said my son didn't know how to drive. I knew exactly what it was and I had told my son to tell them straight that it's the synchromesh and if they didn't investigate I'd kick up a massive stink. After a lot of arguing they finally gave in and agreed to strip the gearbox and guess what? I was right!!!
