A bit of bolster work

Post by dougle_turbo » Sun May 07, 2017 9:11 am

One thing that has been bugging me since I bought the car is the drivers bolster. Although its not actually that bad, it always took something away from the otherwise excellent interior.

So I had a little look around and found a website selling a leather refurbishment kit, and decided to give it a go. I took me around an hour to complete and I rekon bang for buck, it must be the best thing I've done to the car so far!

I haven't bothered with a write up as I followed the video tutorial on the manufactures website word for word.

Apologies for the picture orientation but they are refusing to play ball.

Is the colour a good match?

Thanks guys, really happy with it.

I ordered the black kit and it seems a perfect match. The kit comes with a few other colours to modify to whatever you need. I think the most telling bit is matching the lacquer after the staining. It comes with gloss and matt, then mix together for something in between. I went for a 50/50 mix and it seems to be spot on. The only problem is not being able to tell until its dry!. If you get it wrong you can just sand it down and adjust the mix. It'll be interesting to see how this wears.

I'll take a few better pictures later, I was losing the light and they're a bit grainy.

Very happy, I just wish the kit would magically replace the worn stitching as well!

I'll take a few better pictures later, I was losing the light and they're a bit grainy.
I've just bought the black kit off the back of this thread, it came super quick from furniture clinic.

Did you just use the base colour on the seats and then the lacquer mix on top?

Yes I did what you say above, following the video on their website to the letter/word. I think I did 2/3 coats of the dye. For the lacquer I went for a 50/50 mix and its a good match for my seats. I'd recommend using a hairdryer to speed the whole process up (as per the video). Its also worth getting another sheet of the 1200 grit sand paper as the amount supplied won't go very far! I sanded the leather until it felt the same as the rest of the seat.

Put up some before and after photos.

Wow thats great. Did you use the filler? Or was that not needed?

Also, the second pic looks like the passenger side seat? Do you have an after pic of that?
