What a total clutch!!
What a total clutch!!
So I'm currently trying to decide who the hell im going to get to replace my clutch and flywheel and I'd like some opinions from my fellow brethren of the house of RS please.
In total I've contacted the following with listed cost responses:
Audi - £2100
MRC - £1880
Unit20 - £1963
JJB York - £1500
(All plus VAT)
Two local garages won't touch the work.
To be fair, the labour is the labour, you pay for who you're comfortable with and trust to do the work. The issue I have is all of them have tried it on with the flywheel. Why on earth do they all say an OE flywheel is over £800-£1000 when an LUK one is half the price?
I've read everywhere that they are either Sachs or LUK but even Audi won't admit it!
I asked Unit20 about me supplying an LUK clutch kit and flywheel and he said 'oh we don't fit them as we've had trouble with them before' - wtf??!
I don't really like asking about supplying parts myself because of the whole comeback thing, I get that and I don't mind a marginal markup but Jesus, doubling the cost is obscene in my opinion.
Do they think I'm effing stupid? I get that they are in business to make money (as am I), but I won't be greased up and bummed because I drive an RS.
Any tips please fellas? Or does anyone think I being a tad nuts?
Or am I wrong and Gandhi is still alive, living in a hut, making ends meet by forging clutches and flywheels for Audi?

Re: What a total clutch!!
How much for a clutch & flywheel??
I paid £1500 on my 911 i thought that was expensive!
The porsche specialists use parts by the same company..just not branded porsche....surprised audi indis are not able to do the same..
Guess they just want to cover there backs..
I would ask them to break up the costs of parts and labour to get an idea...then Shop around to see how much the actual parts costs (this way you will know how much they are making on the parts) and if the labour time is justified

Re: What a total clutch!!
Give Robnik on here a PM James. He can supply the uprated braided clutch pipe at the same time.
Re: What a total clutch!!
Also others have imported the flywheel etc from the U.S. For a fraction of the price without issue.
You could also go with a single mass flywheel, which would be lighter, let it rev a little freer and be a little cheaper. That same d, there is a possibility for a small amount of chatter when labouring the engine.

Re: What a total clutch!!
I just paid about £1200 all in for mine, that was....
Luk clutch (euros), luk flywheel (rock usa), sachs slave (euros), robnic pipe, robnic also sold me all the levers and bolts etc (all from audi/tps), millers gearbox oil/ diff oil (ebay) , also crank sensor broke during job and my mate fitted it all for £230 it would have been less but 4 out of 6 exhaust manifold bolts snapped and had to be drilled out and replaced (added an hour or two).parts came in about a grand. It pays to Shop about and use discoumt codes etc.
That said the flywheel in the uk is always around the £800 mark alone (same part as from usa)
You need to factor the fw into the job, everyone told me not to bother but i saw it myself when it came out and was scrap metal , the famous sticky pedal ate my clutch and fw quite quickly.
so if that price of £1500-£2000 youve been quoted is for all the work and all the bits you need to change then its not really that bad a price, as you said its the labour cost that hikes it up quite dramatically. The parts themselves are quite reasonable (if you Shop about) considering the usual RS tax we pay on parts

Re: What a total clutch!!
Have you tried speaking to Camspec in Crawley? Whilst I haven't had any actual work done there I did have my DRC fully checked over because I thought one side of the car was sitting low. Turns out the system was fine but they were very thorough and I will be going there first for any work I need in the future. They really seemed to know their stuff.

Re: What a total clutch!!
I went for the JH Motorsports stage 3r clutch with the lightweight flywheel. Paid more for it but it was so worth it. Put the braided hose in at the same time.
The car feels that nice to drive now that I think the RS4 should have come with a lightweight flywheel to start with. Getting rid of the self adjusting pressure plate is a bonus too.

Try JBS in Chestefeild
Re: What a total clutch!!
I've also just realised Audi's price INCLUDES VAT.
The others are all plus VAT plus they're all a long way from Leeds, so there's the grief of getting the car there.
Given I want some additional work done at MRC, I may see if they'll do a deal.

Re: What a total clutch!!
If you have mrc work on the cards then it seems a no brainer tbh

Re: What a total clutch!!
I was under the impression that Audi had a fixed price of £995 for a new clutch?
