Bilstein b14 question

Post by Starry » Sat Feb 18, 2017 7:59 pm

I fitted mine a few weeks ago and have let them settle, so today i went to adjust them when i noticed the smaller coil was fully compressed when the car was not sat on the wheel and had no weight on it. Was this to do with anti roll bar as the other wheel was on the ground? was this because its only used to keep the main spiring in place if the car is jacked up or leaves the ground whilst driving?

The helper spring is to keep the main spring located at full droop. On the B14 instructions the helper spring should go to the top. When I adjusted mine today the helper spring wasn't squashed like that as it's on the top.

Ive seen them done both top and bottom, i went with bottom as it allowed the main spring to sit in the top mount rubber properly. The small spring has a flat coil and would not sit properly. Surely though, top or bottom it will compress the same as its a weaker spring.

I've attached a picture of mine. I wasn't sure about how it would seat but went with the instructions. The B16 it goes to the bottom.

Has anyone else got a picture of these fitted or any advice on the position of the smaller spring?

I have fitted mine at the bottom as it would not fit correctly at the top. I have spoken with bilstein regarding this and they said it makes no difference really where it is fitted because it will be compressed anyways at normal riding conditions. As long as the top spring fits correctly in to the cup.Image

That was my thought, the thick spring sits properly in the top rubber mount. Cant work out why my helper springs are fully compressed whilst jacked up...

Looks about the same as mine. 660mm ground to arch (SS+ less 10mm).

I think mine was 640mm, then i raised it today by about 10mm, not had it on level ground to check the new hight yet. Cant think how it can compress without more weight pushing it down. Very strange.....
