Oil leak, any ideas before I get it checked?

Post by dougle_turbo » Thu Feb 02, 2017 9:11 pm

Had a new exhaust fitted today and whilst up on the ramp I noticed some oil at the back of the undertray. Managed to convince the bloke doing the exhaust to take the undertray off to have a look. There was a fair bit of oil toward the back of the the engine but nothing forward (so It hasn't travelled back).

Due to the way the oil had spread it was pretty difficult to pinpoint where it was coming from. I replaced the oil cooler and lines about six months ago and haven't noticed any oil on the drive. One of the areas with oil on is where the oil lines go into the block, has anyone ever heard on these (the lines) not seating/sealing properly when fitted? From what I remember when doing the lines, the fit is very positive and would be difficult to get wrong.

Cheers

Any of the connections for the oil cooler could of come loose. What about sump plug? Mine was left loose after a service and leaked oil.

Thanks Mike, I hadn't thought of the sump plug. I'll check that tomorrow (if it ever stops raining!). I checked the oil cooler end and all is good there.

I seem to remember that the oil pipe connectors into the block have an 'O' ring. Might be worth seeing if there's any oil around there and if so undoing them and checking.

There is some oil around there, but you know what its like...it gets everywhere. I'll clean off and then test drive to try and pinpoint.

Stating the obvious, but make sure you check the oil level before you start-up :bigblink:

So spent Sunday trying to locate the oil leak. Got the car up and had the tray off, throughly cleaned the underside of all traces of oil, and proceeded to check everything in range was tight. Managed to get a small turn out of one of the oil line torx screws, but nothing much. I then checked the oil level and then let it idle up to temp, had a look underneath - nothing. So I take it out on a small run, nothing, then got slightly more spirited and still not a drop.

Could it have been that torx screw?

P.s thanks for all the earlier replies.

So looks like this leak has returned. As Doug noticed it looks like the source is where the oil pipes connect into the block but oil has got all over the place so can't be 100% sure. I'm going to change the o rings as this seems like the best bet.

Hi Alex, congrats on purchase., nice car! Get the O rings replaced that connect to the block from the oil cooler, that would be my first port of call as you are doing and seems like the cause of the leak, but use genuine audi O rings! Over time rubber (o rings) expand and contract to the point they become hard and ineffective, the leeking will occur when the oil is hot and becomes thin (normally after a good long run) it will then bypass the hard o rings, and leak, hope that helps, keep us posted!

That is absolutely scandalous. I thought there was someone on here who managed to source a large batch of these and was selling them on to forum members? Might be worth a search through the posts and PM them from the thread.

By the way, is there any seal on the engine block side that needs addressing? Or is it just the o ring on the hose connector?
