Written off car - how to retain a personal plate?

Post by irn_bru_ce » Thu Sep 29, 2016 9:27 pm

Basically my wife rolled her car last night, and so far just made the initial phone call to the insurers to inform them, so have not spoken to an assesor or claim manager yet.

She has her own plate on the car, whats the deal with getting the plate off, don't want to hand over the V5 to the insurer and then lose the plate.

Hope she is okay. Just start the process of putting the plate on retention. I think you can do this online nowadays anyway?

when I informed my insurance company about the flood damage to my car they told me it would be written off and if I wanted to retain the reg then do not send in the V5. I am now at a point of payout and they have said that they will payout 90% now and the other 10% once the transfer of reg has been finalised!!

OK , thanks for that, so I can get start the process of retention tomorrow and then send the current V5 to the DVLA, so once the new V5 comes back with the old reg I will submit that to the insurer

The wife is surprisinly fine, car landed on the roof, 2001 Polo. Makes me glad she is only 5'1" as the whole roof was flattened down onto the seats, with the windscreen moulded over the dash, her worst damage is her hand from when the screen was pressed onto the steering wheel while her right hand was at 12'o'clock.

On the upside, the dining room table looks like a florists with all the flowers arrived
