Odd starter issue

Following on from my previous Battery issue I am still having issues starting the car on occasion
I've changed the battery twice now, first time was actually a dodgy battery contributing to the issue.
However now I know the battery is fine and I'm still having issues.

Symptoms are as follows:

Car starts perfect when cold - every time
When properly warm, driving for 30mins plus, if I stop it may not start. Does not turn over, just a slight click when the button is pressed
Leave it for 10 mins and starts fine

Scan shows the below:

-------------------------------------------------------------
01 Engine Control Module 1

System description: 4.2L V8/4V FSI ª
Software version: 0090
Hardware number: 8E1910560
Long coding: 01040003180F0160

Trouble codes:
P3088 - Starter relay Electrical error in circuit Upper limit exceeded
Intermittent

Any ideas?

your starter relay is stuffed from the code, literally.

Then starter motor £385 :bash:

This could be the relay is not discharing properly when you have warm start, which never is an issue with cold start because the charge would have been depleted

Yes a very similar issue mike
I can remember the exact vagcom code but was pointing to the relay that's why they were replaced ultimately it was the starter motor .

Cheers guys

Audi got back to me on the prices.
325 for the starter and 7 hours to fit it!

Seems excessive...

I think I said this in the other thrread, my old fiat coupe was exactly the same. The starter solenoid would jam when hot so it clicks but as the solenoid didn't fully extend it didn't turn the engine. Wait until it cools then its all fine. Changed starter motor; all good.

Starter from ECP was about £142 I think. Then labour to fit.

It's going in to be done next week. It's having a load of other work done at the same time too like the engine mount that sits under the starter motor so probably won't know the exact time.
