Roof Boxes and Bars

Post by Huwbert » Wed Mar 09, 2016 10:11 pm

Seeing Faisal's car with his roof box on has got me thinking. I will be needing to purchase a box and bars, in the near future, for my avant for extra space (i have a wife!) and was wondering what people recommend brand wise for both?

Are you planning on putting the wife in the roof box? Good idea, I might get one too. :bigblink:

Get a brand new wife. Half your age and add 7 years on. It works every time.

Have had a Kamei Delphin for 5+years - similar to current 340k model. Used many times on both our avants (B6 & B7), for family holidays. Quality is excellent, though wife still prefers to ride in passenger seat
I purchased from roofbox.co.uk -was great service and helpful when i spoke with them.

Good idea, but probably getting a bit close to the roof weight limit i think. Would play havoc with the CoG methinks...... :bash:

Thule Aero bars were great on my Audi Avant. Have a Thule Roofbox and that was fab too. Expensive though.

+1 on the website mentioned.

Atera SIGNO RT aluminium bars work very well and look great. The Thule Spirit 780 is a nice slimline box that looks good on the avant but I don't think it's available anymore.

Just read your post in the spotted section (whilst lying awake reminiscing about life before babies after the 6m old just got up)...didn't realise you'd actually seen me! Thought you were just talking about the pics!

The Thule wingbar edge bars are great; they fit very close to the roof, and I like the fact they don't protrude past the roof rails. Pricey compared to most bars though.

The box, a secondhand mont blanc vista 450l, is a good size in my opinion. 182cm X 88cm X 35cm. I wouldn't want any bigger as it would look massive.

Still waiting for pics from people, I'll get the ball rolling ...

Hard to tell in the pics, but the car took 2 large suitcases, a small case, double pram, a single stroller, and 2x sports holdalls in this pic. A large changing bag, and a few small carrier bags followed (as well as 2 adults and 2 sprogs) but I convinced the Mrs to leave the single stroller behind.

Here are some pictures of mine. I checked the model - it is the kamei delpin 340k and still available today.
Dimensions are 1900 x 750 x350. As said before had this over 5 years, top quality and still perfect after many camping trips. The bars are older style thule aero bars, with thru type rapid foot system which allows us to get a bike up there as well.

I agree with Faisal i did not want a too wide box, and i think the 1900 length is perfect as it allows tailgate to open without being too long and overhanging the windscreen.

(And yes we do have 2 grey avants - the other is an old v6 tdi)
