SATNAV PLUS FRUSTRATIONS RNS-E

I honestly feel blessed to have enjoyed owning my RS4 for almost five years now.
However, my main/only gripe is with the satnav.
An £80 TomTom is much better than this?
- especially with map updates free for life?
The fact is that, this plus a smartphone meltdown dropped me in an embarrassing late arrival at a meeting recently, so, the question is (& I realise that it's a 2015 map), given that the lure of the 7-digit postcode is strong, has anyone tried this company?
http://www.satnavdvd.co.uk/2015-audi-rn ... -134-p.asp
Has anyone else installed this modification, & if so was it a success?
IIRC Petrol Dave is/was the forum expert on this subject.
Cheers,
Ian

I have a copied disc like these will probably send out to you and I don't have much luck with it. It stopped reading he 1st time I used it in anger at exactly the point I needed it ie when I didn't know which way to go. Just had lots of trouble trying to read it after that so went back go original disc. Yours may work better but for me its a no go.

Thanks for the heads-up Mike.
I realise hat the game has moved on now, but Audi should have been ashamed of themselves putting this system in a £50k car.
I should have realised, having bought a Q7 new in 2008...... with a £2500 Technical Pack - shocking.
Thanks,
Ian

Its going to be the same version as my b8. Ive tested both side by side and google maps doesnt cut it for up real time data. The routes are fine with GM but ive been on "clear" GM roads when waze has accurate jams.
GM is a massive improvement on Audi nav, but its still a way behind the latest crowdsourced apps

The basic (and obvious) problem is that RNS-E is very old technology, it's been around over 10 years now.
And that's a general problem with cars, they are designed and built (and used) to timescales that do not really correlate with the evolution of much modern technical kit.
So, I for one tend to ignore the advertising promising the latest communications gizmos on a car. Unless you change it every year or two it will be outdated very soon.
Learn to live with it, or use separate add-on units where you must.

Oh, we don't have traffic round these parts.

In my 10+ years of helping people with RNS-E problems the single biggest cause of problems has been copied DVDs. If it works today don't bet on it working tomorrow especially if it's a cold or damp day.
My advice has consistently been to not use copied DVDs, and I've seen no reasons to change that advice.
I've got an Alpine INE-W925R in my other car which always has the very latest maps (annual subscription), latest speed camera database and has TMC enabled. Is it's routing any better than the (up to 18 months old) maps on the 2010+ RNS-E in my RS4? No, it usually offers me the same routes and makes the same silly suggestions to avoid non-existent jams (because TMC data is often hours out-of-date - one example in France a few years ago was over 1 YEAR out of date).

Wish I read your advice before buying one on E Bay. Took ages to load. worked once and then nothing but whirling- freaked me out before eventually ejecting. Luckily the system seems to work OK with the old original disk. What is the going rate for a proper UK disk?

From Audi UK as it's now a 3DVD set the cost is over £300, but there ARE genuine Audi DVDs on eBay for much less than that - I got my 2016 DVD set for €199 plus €19.90 postage in January.

I have this RNS-E 193G and use original discs with it and must say that it works pretty well, no complaints anyway.
Very similar in use compared with my previous car's MMI 3G (A5 cabriolet). As mentioned here the only down side is
that you need to buy expensive maps every now and then.

I'm with docurley that the aftermarket navs are lightyears ahead of the OEM possibilities.
We all know production cars are made with compromises everywhere. People like us guys on the forum don't like the compromises, so we upgrade. We upgrade suspension, exhausts, engine parts, engine software, tyres, wheels, brakes, lighting, etc etc.
So when it comes to upgrading the weakest part of the car (IMO), the OEM nav, seems a no-brainer to me!
