Starter relay location
Re: Starter relay location
The relay I got given from tps was marked 381 and was purple? What is that for or they send me the wrong one? Wasn't sure where it was to check and it was not returnable.
Re: Starter relay location
Thread revival!!
Just changed my relays under the ecu.
I was expecting to see 1 maybe 2 614 relays and 1 purple 381 relay.
However, as per a couple of posts previous to this, there wasnt a 381 relay.
I've changed the 2 614s to new 644s so see how we get on with that.
Anybody got any clarification on the lack of a 381 relay?
Perhaps one of the 614/644s was in place of the 381?
As far as I'm aware, the only difference is that the 381 is rated at 40amp and the 614/644 at 70amp.
The green relays in the pic are 644s..
The job itself was OK, bit of a bugger getting the ecu cover off. Used a ball joint separator to get the wiper off. About 2 hours in total incl. a couple of smoke breaks.

Re: Starter relay location
These are mine before and after:
Have you looked into the ones under the steering wheel?
I ’think’ one is for the clutch switch, the other for one touch starting or something along those lines, I did work it out on ELSAWIN but that was a while ago:

Re: Starter relay location
looks like your relays under the ecu are the same as mine so thats good...
Not checked the ones under the steering column (yet) - i'll investigate - thanks.
I've got the upper and lower clutch switches to go on if needed but it starts on the button (assuming it starts) so dont think it'd be clutch or button related.
And its had a new starter last week as well.
I'll see what its like over the next few days and go from there.
Cheers for the photos - you've put my mind at ease now

Re: Starter relay location
Purple/Pink 381's replaced the 373 relay I believe. But not found anything on the the 645 superceeding the 381 which is quite possible.

Re: Starter relay location
Just checked mine underneath the steering wheel.
I can see that they're all 373's but its going to be a struggle to get to them as there's a load of aftermarket stuff in the way...
I've ordered a couple of 645's in the meantime.
Did a bit of digging and it looks like 373, 381 & 645 relays are the same - 40amp with same layout.
Cheers

Re: Starter relay location
just a bit of confirmation...
Changed the 2 starter relays this morning - below is a pic of the 373, 381 & 645 relays.
Hopefully you can make the relay diagrams out, but I'm happy they all have the same function..
Cheers

Socket 3 (J695 green coloured)
Socket 4 (J53 brown coloured)
I came across this thread as I'm doing a reaserch on ordering replacements for my starting relay.
I'm having trouble finding the PART CODE for these two sockets (image attached): Socket 3 (J695 green coloured)
Socket 4 (J53 brown coloured)
Just wondering if anyone here may be able to help me identify.
Much appreciated !

Re: Starter relay location
Maybe have a closer look... similar, but not the same.
The Purple 381 starter relay which is normally in space No. 3 under the dash has an extra diode between the windings and pin 85.
Think its to do with the way the starter solenoid current has to pass through both relays, and the output current is also fed back to the ECU so it can monitor it, so it knows if a relay is sticking. Think the extra Diode comes into play so the ECU can identify which relay is sticking, and throw the relevant fault code.
Its not a normal back EMF diode like you would normally see across the windings on other relays, as all these use parallel resistors to supress back EMF instead, the extra Diode in the Purple ones is fairly odd set up, and is in series between the windings and the pin.
It may well work fine with a different relay in there unless one relay starts sticking, and it will probably either throw no fault code, or will throw faults for both relays.
