Oil leak

Post by boombastik » Sat Feb 13, 2016 3:18 pm

Guys

Cars developed a small oil leak from what I can see its dripping off the part where the oil cooler hoses attached to the block just under the belt tensioner. Took a couple pics. Has anyone experienced this before and what kind a job was it to repair.

The oil leak will most likely be coming from the oil cooler pipe on the engine block side. Each pipe has a rubber o ring which seals. If the o ring is faulty, then will need replacing. From memory, its circa £25 from Audi.

My guess would be the O ring too, unless the crimped end of the oil cooler pipe has a small split but it doesn't look too corroded I'm the pics.

any one got the part numbers for these O-rings and anyone got an exploded view of this, trying to determine if its a task i'll undertake in my garage or take it to my mates and use his ramp

It is quite an easy procedure. All you need is an allen key on an extended ratchet. Once screw removed, pull the pipe off. Replace o-ring and do the reverse to get things back in place.

Before putting the new o-ring on make sure you oil it up, so it doesnt catch anywhere.

I don't remember draining the oil when I changed the cooler on mine (which involved new pipes too so necessitated undoing the connector you're referring to).

I'd rather get the audi ones tbh the car is due MOT in about 6 weeks so i'll get it booked in to my mates garage in 2 weeks time and i'll sort the leak at the same time

The cheaper labour rate at your mate's garage will offset the cost of the O rings :D My stealer's now charging £120/hour

Well low and behold the oil leak has stopped. I've been using the car all week and it's the most use its had since before Xmas and the leak has stopped. No drips on the garage floor at all since using the car.

Strange !

got an update on this leak

ive noticed when using the car the leak stops, then when I leave the car for a few days it starts again, I can only presume due to the change in temperature, my garage is pretty cold during the winter if its minus outside then its the same in the garage.

orings are designed to hold pressure once energized so this will be once its running and up to temp it stops

any way I went to Audi last week and purchased the 2 orings £72 for the 2 I took them to my mate that's got an interest in a seal manufacturer for the oil & gas industry... they have sized measured and done all sorts of fancy tests on the orings and they have sourced the very same one from a manufacturer in Germany that produces these for the automotive industry

the minimum order he could take was 100 items........ so he ordered 100 for me with fedex hot shot shipping to the UK for a grand total of............................................drum roll please.......................................... £12

so I plan to visit audi today to return the two purchased for a refund as the parts guy said this wouldn't be an issue as its a stock item

any one wanting oil cooler pipe orings then please let me know id be happy to share these
