Oil Temp - Digital Display Gone

Hi - Did a search before posting so sorry if this has come up before.
The digital display in the centre of the dash that tells you about the 'do not exceed 7000 rpm' until the car is warm and then reverts to the digital oil temp has disappeared!
Nothing else missing that I can see. Any ideas anyone please?
Thanks
John

Any fault codes seen on the instruments using
VCDS (formerly known as VAG-Com)?

No - unfortunately not joined that happy band of
VCDS owners. I'm not very technical and the content I've seen on here looks a bit daunting tbh.
It's an odd one - doesn't feel like something to cause a visit to a dealer; are there any
VCDS owners close to York I could call on (for the price of a pint or 2?)
Thanks
John

Is it just blank or is there something else in it's place?

Hi Mike
Just blank! Returned to the car tonight having been stood all day and wondered whether a restart might cure it somehow. But no. Still blank. No 'wont exceed 7000 rpm' when cold, and no pile temp readout when warm. No pixelation or anything! Very odd.
Someone must have seen this before...?

That's a fairly unique issue I reckon. Best guess would be that the temp sender (one unit with the oil level sender IIRC) may have simply failed. With no reliable temp data the whole thing might disable itself. Sounds like a reasonable thing to program as a fail safe.

Sounds plausible JC; is the sender the sort of component that could be cheaply and readily obtained, and then swapped out on a DIY basis? Or is that just wishful thinking?
Thanks
John

The sensor itself is fairly inexpensive at 40 quid or so. But reading the codes is probably necessary to avoid swapping something that might not be broken. To be honest a complete absence of data is unusual for a sensor, there might be an electrical connection issue to the sensor as well.
If that's the case you might see an "open or short to plus" error stored in the ECU for this particular sensor.

....and display now back again.
Interestingly, showed oil can and 'dashes' when started and for the first 100 yards. Then, to Max 7000 RPM. Didn't get far enough to get to temperature (was school collection emergency)
Hmm!

I've seen that every now and then.
The issue being intermittent suggests an electrical connection issue. Dead sensors stay dead.
