preventing errors after manifold deflap?

Hi, the car is driving brilliantly six months post deflap, decoke, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I'm still running the factory engine map as I like things OEM. As has been said on here manys a time, this car was pretty good out of the box.

Problem is, the manifold sensors are tripping the management lights fairly regularly now. Hardly surprising: I was told this might happen. I have a VCDS and an old laptop in the car. Often though, turning the ignition off and on does the trick.

I think I already know the answer (remap) but I'd rather not. I'm perfectly happy with the car as-is and I cringe at the thought of paying for a bells and whistles remap when all I really want is an obsolete sensor ignored.

Anything clever I can do with a VCDS or should I just give into the inevitable?

Speak to Doug at MRC. Maybe he'll do you a reduced price map that just maps out the warning with no other changes (although I'd recommend you drive a mapped car first as I think you will like the change).

I'm planning on doing a decoke later on in the year when the weather gets better and was planning to remove mine so it sounds like I need to put some money away for a remap. :beerchug:

Hi Stu,

Who did your deflap?

Did you have the JHM manifold spacers and heater bypass kit fitted at the same time?

CheeRS ps just enquiring as looking at a deflap in the summer

why deflap if you like oem?it makes it drive like a mule when cold?

i think you can buy the sensors for the manifold, im sure i read it somewhere.

failing that remap

Yeah, that’s always possible. However it’s a long way down and back up again from sunny Newcastle.

I had mine done at the same time as having a vacuum leak diagnosed at Revolution. Very pleased with the whole thing. No, no spacers etc added. Just flaps taken away as I know that are prone to faults when put back in after decokes.

And now I get faults with them out :bash:

That’s not my experience - seems smooth enough to me. I had the flaps left out after the carbon clean as I have read that they are prone to failure when they are replaced post clean.

Interesting re: different sensors. Does anyone know any more about this?

I have a deflapped, port/polish IM. I can tell you that removing the flaps themselves do not cause a CEL. If you put the back in tomorrow you will still have a CEL.

if the shafts (that the tumble flaps would be screwed in) are still connected to (unbroken) actuator arms and there is plenty vacuum to "open/close" them, then the ecu should be tricked to believing everything is functioning to spec. If all pieces are intact and all vacuum hoses attached and operational then you need to replace the sensors.

I do not think that Audi sells manifold parts, you would have to buy as a whole which is quite pricey (~1.4k usd). I have seen them for sale on ebay though should you need to run down some parts.

There is a sticky where you can test functionality of the RS 4 IM- By: Silverrs4 using the vagtool. Perform the test and check back in with results.

Thanks for the info. Then I wonder what exactly's going on. I doubt very much the vacuum system is at fault as everything else is in perfect health. Perhaps the actuator arm is stuck. It's only bank 2 giving intermittent implausible signals on the VCDS. I haven't run through the solenoid test for a while.

Hi there,

Do you suffer stuttering cold starts with the flaps removed?

Did you fit JHM spacers and heater bypass kit?

Was this undertaken with a decoke so difficult to measure the power benefits?

Stu

When you had the car Deflapped did they leave the actuators connected to the flap shafts?

If they did I think this is where the problem maybe, had a look over the second hand inlet manifold I picked up just before Xmas, the guy had his changed by Audi as it was faulty.

If the flap shaft wears excessively I believe it can suck in air and hence throwing CEL's ,

I don't know. Good point. I'll have to ask.
