As per the title, I took the car for an MOT today and it failed due to a split CV boot. Is this a specialist job for Audi or can any competent garage do it?
I believe you need to take driveshaft out for this? Ive no idea how straight forward or complex this is on the B7, so what's your recommendations on who is best placed to do this job?

And is it worth doing the other side at the same time? I assume it has split due to age so the other side is likely to go soon too?

I had exactly the same. The MOT spotted the outer boot was split and when I took it to be done they noticed that the inner was split as well (difficult to see that one from an MOT I think). I had mine done at APS, but it could be done by any Indy really and it was only because the inner needed doing that the driveshaft came out.

Thanks. It was the inner that has split on mine. Is the outer easier to do? Roughly how much does it cost? I'm guessing it's pretty much all labour and a few quid for the boot.

Mike, if you've been getting your MOT done through Audi then you should have MOT insurance which covers the cost of problems like this.

The outer is easier as there is just less stuff to take off! I can't remember the cost, but you're right that it is mostly labour as I think it was a couple of hours.

I've had hitchin audi do two inners on mine - frustratingly at different times on different axels lol.

Cost £200 both times. An Indy would be about £140 I'd guess.

Unfortunately Sam I don't get my MOTs done at Audi as it is a bit of a pain to get to for me but maybe ill start using them.

Good timing for this thread... My MOT is tomorrow, spent the morning giving it the once over, pretty hard to properly check the CV boots without the car high up off the ground but seem to be OK, no sign of a split or any grease having leaked.

Only thing i found is slightly worn front discs on the inside... feeling I'm gonna need a new set soon, the RS4 fairytale can't last forever eh!

I had a inner CV boot split, the Audi tech removed the drive shaft completely and took him some time to remove the drive shaft assembly due to the metal that had expanded due to heat, if left to cool down then might have came out easily. Only took him less than an hour in total, I was there watching him do the whole thing,.anyway, I would say its possible on the drive way if you had all the tools and the room to manoeuvre.

The hole in the CV boot was a pin hole in size, and could be heard when squeezing the boot.

FYI only a out CV joint is a MOT failure

No, inner CV gaiter is a failure too since 2012. Rear shafts are not part of MOT unless comprising part of suspension (I.E. old jags etc).

Thanks for clearing that up mate, wasn't aware. A lot of changes was made in 2012, hadn't realised inner was too.

Yeah mine was an inner. I took the wheel off the other side to check the state of them and the outer offside looks brand new. I couldn't clearly see the inner one so asked the garage to check it and change if necessary but he said the offside inner was fine. Anyway, all done now but it's back in for oil pipe failure.
