Oil query

Post by KGRS4 » Sat May 03, 2014 11:58 am

Hi folks,

Quick question regarding oil.

Has anyone used
Castrol edge FST Fully synthetic 5w30 or
Just Castrol Edge Fully synthetic 5w30??

Is FST ok to use?

Sooo many folk going on about different oils it's hard to know which I should go for. But 5w30 was used by the dealer last service.

Is there a thread to see who uses what?

Thanks.

Tell me about it :)

Dealers using Castrol professional long life fully syn 5w30
Quantum same sepec, and Mobil

What is so confusing is if castrol retail consumer is called Edge but dealers do not use this ...

Fst is new I think introduced few years back...( I may be wrong)

Sorry to confuse you more, I sure am :)

I've been told post carbon clean try to get a oil that keep the engine temp hot, but all of the oils are vw spec 504 00. / 507 00 and 5w30 fully synthetic ..

Will tune here to see :)

i use Casrtol Edge 5w30 fst in my supercharged one and its no problems , i just had it analysed in a lab after changing it and it was all good , better than i expected really , so that should be fine , but any 504/507 should be fine or you could buy specialist oils if your not shy o spending more

Ah ok, I take it specialist oils aren't recommended by Audi though?

My book only mentioned 2 specs 502 and 504 will a 507 be ok to use?

507 is just fine - it's te latest VW/Audi approved spec. Supersedes 502. Always make sure its 5w 30...

Page 271 of the RS4 manual states:

VW 502 00 for fixed interval
VW 504 00 for long life

VW 502 00 for fixed interval
(Application area: Low viscosity oils for petrol engines and difficult operating conditions. Normal service intervals. Replaces VW 501 01 and VW 500 00.)

VW 504 00 for long life
(Application area: for all petrol engines with extended service intervals. Replaces VW 503 00 and 503 01.)

I have a friend who works for a company that produce oils for car and companies he said there are only 2 companies that produce there own oil everything else is manufactured by one company and branded for them. He said is does not matter about the brand as long as the specifications are the same to the car manufacturer tell you to use. I mentioned about the RS4 having used Castrol oil he said "its just a marriage of convenience as Porches will tell you to use mobil 1"
