what metal are the oil cooler pipe ends

the parts that go into the block, are they mild or stainless? they are magnetic, so not ali
also anyone know the cooler thread measurement, would have it sorted if it was in mm

They'll be mild if it's magnetic. Stainless isn't magnetic.

I always thought that to be a rough rule of thumb? Sure I've seen stainless that is magnetic (granted, not as strong as other metals).
Will be stunned if it's stainless given how much the pipe ends rust.

Yeah I know what you mean but these ends that go into the block are mint, but that's probably down to them not being directly behind the grill.

I was told by an Audi mechanic that they're mild steel. As you say, the reason they don't tend to corrode badly at the block end is because they're fairly well protected from rain/road salt. Sorry, don't know the thread size.

You can get some grades of stainless that is magnetic but it tends to be for very specialist jobs like in the nuclear industry etc, and no probs.
