So i'm dropped the dredded 'Ultimatum'...

Not sure if this is common in every marriage after 7 years, however bedtime activity used to be far more interesting than it's become!

Now when the lights go out, we have to discuss the most important and stressful aspects of our lives before I try to go off to sleep!

Our house is currently on the market and we've accepted an offer, with a decent bit of extra cash in savings and a rented property we can remortgage, we can afford a reasonably nice bigger property - however, they always want more don't they?!! So i'm given the 'if you sold the RS we could afford an even bigger house' ultimatum!

I'm like, don't even fookin go there. I took me 4 years to buy that car outright. If I sell it, i'm using the Smart Car every day, all week, until my business can afford to fund a better car or I get so pissed off I end up personally financing something and then our monthly out outgoings go up.

Don't get me wrong we're not in a position to 'have' to sell the RS to afford to move up, but the extra 19-20k would make a big impact towards any house purchase. I believe no matter what situation were in, she'd be saying the same thing. If I had a decent car financed through the business, she'd be saying, get rid, downsize and take more money out the business.

I know sense should prevail, but being a devowed complete and utter petrol head, life satisfaction for me doesn't revolve around drinking, football, out every weekend 'on it' and just the house ect. My car keeps me sane and apart from the gym is my only pastime (that and the kids!). I couldn't go another 2-3 years on finance or driving a shitter I think I'd ruin my wife and kids lives!!

What do we think? Am I being selfish? (go easy please guys!).

Well I just sold my beloved for the bigger picture. Sometimes you should go with the head. It is only a car at the end of the day as much as we love them.

By the way I close to tears when I parted with my RS 5 and I still miss it every day.

Oh, I echo all of that. Not so much the 'don't buy an RS4' or 'sell the RS4', but after 10 years of marriage, 2 boys (who are indeed proper mini-petrol heads) the underlaying current is why have that on the driveway when you work form home! Surely the 11 year old Cooper S was good enough still?

I'm the same - zero extravagance bar the car and sporting pastime (not football) and certainly not out on the 'lash' every weekend by far. However, I worked my arse off for 18 months in my business to buy my RS4 outright, also. Sure, moving is always on the cards to the next bigger 'thang' and the mortgage to go with it.

Strip me of my one single milestone I worked towards for nearly 2 years and I'd think 'OK, apart from the joys of children (love them to bits, but...) what do I have that gives me my pleasure, my release and my 'go to' to make this worthwhile?'.

Selfish? Far from it. 95% of life is the getting to the 5% of the enjoyment. Selling the RS4 because it helps you jump one base further isn't a reason - life is too short. Imagine waking up one day knowing the 4 is not on your driveway...

I had a Smart Car and I vowed I'd never rely on one again - you'd only forget that you were in it and try and make that overtake...

Keep the 4. Period.

Im in a similar situation myself so thought id share my thoughts. Me and the mrs are married, 1 child at the mo with another on the way, dont spend money on much apart from my family+the car same as you, massive petrolhead, were moving to a bigger house soon and i considerd selling my rs4 to put more money down as deposit for the new house. After speaking the mortgage company i was advised that it was only gunna make around £40-£50 per month difference to put down another 10-15k on the house! I didnt have to think very long about keeping the car for the sake of £50 a month.
Not sure what financial position your in but id reccomend checking out how much difference to your outgoings its actually going to make, i was surprised at how little difference there was.

TOTALLY AGREE - I would not sell my car unless I was destitute!

Likewise in a similar position, S4 is my second car and might go to increase property investment fund. Like yourself Jay mine was purchased outright, and whilst by aging S4 is worth a fraction of your immaculate B7, every little helps! Was hoping to view a house today but strangely the estate agent hasn't been able to get hold of the owner for over 24 hours

Another option is to put cash into house and then when the house is sorted finance something. Several people on RS246 have ordered Golf R on finance deal, not something I would have considered, but its an unbelievable deal.

The age old argument: Women & Nest VS Man & Toy

Goodluck, we can say what we like on here but you're the one that will have to lay there living with the 'fallout'.

As Silas mentioned earlier - is 18-20k realistically going to get the house she wants, in the condition she wants to live in?

Tell her that you will sell the car if she stops using the expensive hairdressers and makeup etc.

You can offer your services using a set of clippers, and buy some cheap makeup on the internet, then see where the loyalties lie!!

It is a tough one, but I am sure the both of you will have your own luxuries that mean so much to you.

I'm lucky, my partner loves the RS more than I do! I'd say ok, I'll trade in the car for the bigger house and while I'm at it I'll trade you in for a 21 year old. Deal?

Just get the surveyor to under value the house, then threaten to pull out last minute, unless they drop the asking price, not very nice thing to do, BUT this might give you some spare cash to supercharge yours :beerchug: or you loose the house if that doesn't work :bash: sorry not very helpful, but that's nothing new

Damn I love you guys!! To be honest she's not persisted and we've been together ten years, so she knows my obsession.

We can't actually find a place at the moment, so we may have to live with the outlaws for a short time, luckily they have a place in Turkey they spend most of the year in!!

Silas - that suggestion is absolutely epic! I knew I'd get sense from you all!
